Summary

In the late evening of November 27, 2022, an effusive eruption began inside Moku'aweoweo caldera at the summit of Mauna Loa volcano. Within a few hours, lava had covered most of the caldera floor, and several fissures just outside caldera sent short lava flows up to 3 kilometers (2 miles) to the southwest. Later in the morning of November 28, summit effusion ceased and the eruption moved into the volcano's Northeast Rift Zone. Several rift zone fissures were initially active, but by November 30 effusion had focused at a vent known as fissure 3. For another 10 days, fissure 3 fountained and fed lava flows that eventually stretched 18 kilometers (11 miles) to the north, threatening but not reaching the Daniel K. Inouye Highway across [...]

Purpose

This geospatial database provides a digital representation of volcanic features from the 2022 summit and Northeast Rift Zone eruption of Mauna Loa volcano, Hawaiʻi. Feature data are also included for sample sites in the U.S. Geological Survey data release "Sample details and near-real-time ED-XRF, grain size, and grain shape data collected during the November – December 2022 eruption of Mauna Loa volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi" by Downs and others (2023, accessed at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9NA7GU3).

Rights

This work is marked with Creative Commons Zero v1.0 Universal (https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/). The included vector data should not be used in any manner that violates the spatial resolution of approximately 2 millimeters (0.1 inches) at 1:5,000-scale, or 10 meters (33 feet) on the ground. Although digital geospatial vector data are not constrained by scale like paper maps, the inherent uncertainty of the source data is transferred to this database. The vector data were edited at a scale of 1:5,000; therefore, no data of higher resolution have been included. Displaying or analyzing the data at larger scales will not provide greater detail, and it may reveal irregularities that were not visible at the intended scale of 1:5,000. If these data are used alongside any higher-resolution digital data, the spatial resolution of the combined dataset will only be equal to that of the lowest-resolution data. The included rapid-response raster data serve as the best-available depiction of the eruption area at time of their collection, therefore it is recommended that they only be used for general depictions of the 2022 Mauna Loa summit and Northeast Rift Zone eruption, and not for research-level analysis. Acknowledgment of the USGS is appreciated in any products derived from these data. Unless otherwise stated, all data, metadata and related materials are considered to satisfy the quality standards relative to the purpose for which the data were collected. Although these data and associated metadata have been reviewed for accuracy and completeness and approved for release by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), no warranty expressed or implied is made regarding the display or utility of the data for other purposes, nor on all computer systems, nor shall the act of distribution constitute any such warranty. The data are released on condition that neither the USGS nor the U.S. Government may be held liable for any damages resulting from their authorized or unauthorized use. Although the data have been subjected to rigorous review and is substantially complete, the USGS reserves the right to revise the data pursuant to further analysis and review. Inundated areas shown should not be used for navigation, regulatory, permitting, or other legal purposes. All trademarks and trade names are the property of their respective owners.
