Here we provide data used to report on changes in tidal marsh elevation in relation to our network of 20 fixed benchmarks located across a geographically broad network of coastal elevation monitoring stations with standard monitoring protocols. This dataset includes Surface Elevation Table (SET) measurements taken from 10 sites along the US Atlantic coast, ranging from Virginia to Maine. Each site includes 2 SETs where repeat measurements of wetland surface elevation were made from 2005-2019.

We measured turbidity along transects from channel to marsh interior for 4 sites along the east coast of the United States at: Mockhorn Island, on the Eastern Shore of VA, USA; Plum Island in MA, USA; Goodwin Islands on the York River, VA USA; and the Altamaha River estuary, in GA, USA.
This data release includes sampling location data, laboratory processed surface water chemistry data (anions, cations, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, deuterium, trace metals), laboratory processed pore water chemistry data (anions, cations, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, trace metals), laboratory process sediment data (trace metals), and whole-body trace metal concentrations plus stable isotope values (carbon, nitrogen, deuterium) for larval aquatic insects, emergent adult insects, and two riparian spider families from Torch Lake and Gratiot Lake (N=3 sites at each lake). The data contain yearly modeled estimates of Pacific salmon escapement (in annual metric tons of wet mass) from 1976 to 2015 across four regions of western North America. A second data file contains modeled estimates of contaminant or nutrient concentrations in Pacific Salmon. The modeled estimates were derived from Bayesian generalized linear models (contaminant or nutrient concentrations) or from Bayesian generalized additive models (Salmon Escapement).

Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations were measured in the lower Ottawa River in 2009 before dredging and after dredging in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. Media collected for analysis included sediment, water, macroinvertebrates, and tetragnathid spiders at 18 stations. At each station 16 surface sediment core samples (top 15 cm) were collected and composited together with a mechanical mixer to achieve a homogeneous composite sample. Description of Work This work will investigate linkages between sediment PCB concentrations and subsequent exposure in riparian organisms living on land next to the river and harbor. This is an extension of prior work at the site that has been used by the Manistique River and Harbor Remediation Team (comprised of managers and scientists from USEPA GLNPO, USEPA ORD, NOAA, USACOE, USGS and the state of Michigan) to guide plans for delisting activities. The St Louis River (SLR) is the second largest tributary to Lake Superior and a designated area of concern (AOC) due to past industrial contamination of organic chemicals and heavy metals, including mercury (Hg). Sediments, prey items (odonates, mixed benthic invertebrates, and spiders), and game fish were targeted within this study to determine if industrial sources of Hg were bioaccumulating into the food web. This data release includes sampling location data, field-collected water chemistry data, cation and anion concentration data for water and tissues of submerged aquatic vegetation, aquatic insect larvae, adult aquatic insects and riparian spiders from 35 first- and second-order sub-alpine streams that ranged over several orders of magnitude in metal concentrations but were similar in elevation, geology, and stream morphology. Sampling was completed in late summer, after snowmelt runoff was complete and as the streams approached baseflow conditions.
Dataset consists of 4-day, 14-day, and full life responses of laboratory cultured mayflies (Neocloeon triangulifer) to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Responses were measured as survival at 4 days, 14 days, pre-emergent nymph (PEN) stage, and emergence; 14-day length; number of days to PEN stage, and imago live weight. Water quality and analytical chemistry results associated with toxicity data are included.
We measured turbidity along a transect from channel to marsh interior for 1 year, beginning in June 2016 at a salt mash in the Altamaha River estuary. We measured turbidity (NTU) with three optical back scatter sensors to in a shore normal transect, with one in the channel (YSI 6600), and two on the marsh surface. The “marsh edge sensor” was 2.4m from the channel edge (Seapoint, RBR Solo) and the “marsh interior sensor” was 18m from the edge (Seapoint, RBR Duo; Figure 1c). Turbidity was measured in Mockhorn Island Marsh on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Three RBR Duo sensors were used. One was located at the edge of the marsh, one 7.8 meters away from the edge station in the channel and one in the marsh interior. Data was recorded every 15 minutes.

Turbidity and calibrated suspended sediment concentration measurements were collected along a shore-normal transect from the channel in West Creek, Rowley, MA extending 24 meters into the marsh interior at Law's Point at the PIE LTER. Data was collected every 15 minutes over two different growing seasons during 2016 and 2017, totaling 9 months.

We measured turbidity along a transect from channel to marsh interior from December 2015 to January 2017 at a salt mash at the mouth of the York River in the Chesapeake Bay, VA, USA. We measured turbidity (NTU) with three optical back scatter sensors (YSI EXO) to in a shore normal transect, with one in the channel and two on the marsh surface at 1m from the marsh edge and 12m from the marsh edge, respectively. The sensors measured every 15 minutes and were equipped with automatic wipers to reduce biofouling. Following retrieval, the turbidity time series data was filtered to remove any erroneous points and times when the sensors were fouled or exposed (Coleman et al. 2020).

We conducted a field experiment at the Moneystump Swamp in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester, MD, USA to simulate a natural forest disturbance event (e.g., storm-induced flooding) by inducing the death of established trees (coastal loblolly pine, Pinus taeda) at the marsh-upland forest ecotone. Consumption rates and total mercury concentration of food items and consumers collected at six sites on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Sites ranged from 0-367 river kilometers downstream of Lees Ferry (AZ, USA). Samples were analyzed for total Hg using cold vapor atomic fluorescence (CVAF, Tekran Model 2600 CVAF spectrometer) following EPA Method 7474. Consumption rate samples were collected quarterly from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2009. Food items and consumers were collected June 12-28 2008.
Mercury is an atmospherically transported contaminant found even in relatively pristine habitats. Once accumulated at the base of the food web, mercury can move between animals that are linked trophically. Pond-breeding amphibians may be particularly important vectors of mercury flux from remote freshwater to terrestrial systems because they feed on algae and detritus as tadpoles and metamorphose into insectivorous terrestrial adults where they carry out most of their remaining life cycle.
