Purpose

While methylmercury (MeHg) readily bioaccumulates and is toxic at high concentrations, some studies suggest that the presence of selenium (Se) can reduce MeHg bioaccumulation and toxicity. Before the addition of Se to aquatic ecosystems is promoted as a risk management tool, it is imperative that we understand its impact on Hg accumulation in primary producers and emergent insects. These data were collected to determine the accumulation of Hg and Se in mayflies and diatoms, as well as the toxicity of Se on mayflies.
