The activities associated with the construction of a new walkway within Mammoth Cave caused vibrations to be felt in the cave, which is home to an endangered Indiana bat roost. These data were collected at the request of the National Park Service to monitor the vibration levels near a bat roost within Mammoth Cave National Park to determine if construction-induced vibration might be inducing the observed activity of the bats. Seven geophones and two accelerometers were placed in the passage to the bat roost to monitor the distribution of ground velocity and acceleration. The vibration signature of individual construction equipment (jackhammer, place compactor, and hammer drill), human activities during a simulated...

Water pressure, ground velocity and ground acceleration data were collected May 19-22, 2014 at Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois and also June 2-5, 2014 in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lemont, Illinois. The data were collected to measure water pressures and ground velocities produced from the firing of a seismic water gun.

These data were collected to characterize the vibration signature of individual pieces of construction equipment (jackhammer, plate compactor, and hammer drill) from human activities during a simulated bat survey and from ambient levels during a period of limited manual construction activities from within Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. Mammoth Cave National Park was chosen because it is home to an Indiana bat roost and the activities associated with the construction of a new walkway caused vibrations to be felt in the cave. Geophones and accelerometers were used to measure ground velocity and acceleration, respectively. Vibrations were measured for approximately 10 seconds during each triggering of the source...

Description of Work Water guns are being placed in backwater habitats where bighead carp and silver carp currently are to see if they can be used to deny fish access to these preferred off-channel habitats or trap them in areas where they can be captured and removed. The energy emitted from water guns is being measured to determine the risk associated with water gun operation near navigation structures. These research topics are being investigated under laboratory (USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, La Crosse, WI) and field conditions (for example, a backwater area of the Illinois River near Morris, IL). Relevance & Impact If water guns alter the behavior of bighead carp or silver carp then they...
Resource agencies are searching for effective methods to prevent the spread of invasive Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), hereafter bigheaded carps, from the Mississippi River basin into the Laurentian Great Lakes. Elevating carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in water within locks and other pinch points is an approach being considered to reduce invasive fish passage. Laboratory studies have shown that bigheaded carps strongly avoid areas of elevated CO2 (Kates et al. 2012; Dennis et al. 2015). Similarly, telemetry studies found that CO2 can be used to exclude bigheaded carps from certain locations (Donaldson et al. 2016) and reduce upstream movement (Cupp et...
