This landing page contains peak-flow frequency analyses by the U.S. Geological Survey Wyoming - Montana Water Science Center. Sets of analyses are published as data releases which are child items to this landing page.
The USGS Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center (WY–MT WSC) completed a report (Sando and McCarthy, 2018) documenting methods for peak-flow frequency analysis following implementation of the Bulletin 17C guidelines. The methods are used to provide estimates of peak-flow quantiles for 50-, 42.9-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs) for selected streamgages operated by the WY–MT WSC. This data release presents peak-flow frequency analyses for 11 selected streamgages in Jefferson County, Montana, that were based on methods described by Sando and McCarthy (2018).

In 2021, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program, cataloged and scanned notes and calculations for indirect measurements taken during flood events in Montana. This product provides a publicly available catalog of the field notes, photos, survey information, and calculations for indirect measurements at selected sites. Indirect measurements are surveyed by the USGS after floods by identifying high water marks along rivers indicating the maximum stream stage. These high water marks are used to estimate the peak discharge through standardized methods. Estimates of peak streamflow from the indirect estimates were were added to the National...

The WY-MT WSC conducted a study to develop regression equations for estimating peak-flow frequencies in Montana, using channel-width characteristics. Channel widths were measured in the field at 69 streamgage sites. Chase, K.J., Sando, R., Armstrong, D.W., and McCarthy, P., 2021, Regional regression equations based on channel-width characteristics to estimate peak-flow frequencies at ungaged sites in Montana using peak-flow frequency data through water year 2011 (ver. 1.1, September 2021): U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2020–5142, 49 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20205142.

Several USGS National Programs require data from USGS streamgages for statistical analyses and for model calibration and verification. In support of those programs, a dataset containing locations, basin characteristics, and regulation information for USGS streamgages was created. This dataset includes most of the streamgages in GAGES-II (Falcone, 2011) plus 5519 additional sites and incorporates reviews by scientists in many USGS Water Science Centers. Each phase of the SWIM project will be published as a data release and available below. USGS Streamgages in the Conterminous United States Indexed to NHDPlus v2.1 Flowlines to Support Streamgage Watershed InforMation (SWIM), 2021 includes location information for...

The Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) was used to produce simulations of streamflow for seven watersheds in eastern and central Montana for a baseline period (water years 1982-1999) and three future periods (water years 2021-2038, 2046–2063, and 2071-2038). The seven areas that were modeled are the O'Fallon, Redwater, Little Dry, Middle Musselshell, Judith, Cottonwood Creek, and Belt watersheds. Appendix 2 is provided as supplementary information to accompany the forthcoming journal article Potential Effects of Climate Change on Streamflow for Seven Watersheds in Eastern and Central Montana. These data document the monthly streamflow (in cubic meters per second) at the downstream end of each stream...
