The groundwater-level change maps for the Sparta-Memphis aquifer are constructed as a point-to-point comparison between wells measured in both 2013 and 2015. Wells not measured in both 2013 and 2015 were not included in the change maps construction. The 2013-2015 change map contains 241 corresponding wells. Groundwater-level differences were calculated by subtracting 2013 groundwater-level measurements, in feet below land surface from the 2015 groundwater-level measurements, in feet below land surface.

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, the Arkansas Geological Commission, and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has monitored water levels in the Sparta Sand of Claiborne Group and Memphis Sand of Claiborne Group since the 1920's. Ground-water withdrawals have increased while water levels have declined since monitoring was initiated. This report has been produced to describe ground-water levels in the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand and provide information for the management of this valuable resource. The 2005 potentiometric-surface map of the aquifers in the Sparta Sand and Memphis Sand was constructed using water-level data...

Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall on October 29, 2012, near Brigantine, New Jersey, had a significant impact on coastal New Jersey, including the large areas of emergent wetlands at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Barnegat Bay region. In response to Hurricane Sandy, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken several projects to assess the impacts of the storm and provide data and scientific analysis to support recovery and restoration efforts. As part of these efforts, the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) sponsored Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project in collaboration with the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), and National Oceanic and...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides derivative county-level statistics of water used by Kansas irrigators in 2014. The published county-level application rate statistics from the previous 4 years (2010–13) are shown with the 2014 statistics and are used to calculate a 5-year average. The 2014 annual total precipitation and the current 30-year climatic normal (based on 1981–2010) are also shown by county. Other data published in this data release include the amount of water used, irrigated acres, and application rates by crop type and the amount of water used and number of irrigated acres for each irrigation method. Total reported irrigation water use in 2014 was 3.3 million acre-feet of water...

Clean water is important for a variety of uses, including drinking, recreation, and as habitat for aquatic species. Nonpoint-source pollution, such as nutrients, sediment, and pesticides from agricultural runoff, is a major cause of impaired water quality in the United States . Vegetation and soil in natural land cover help to remove pollutants from runoff water before it reaches streams and other waterways by slowing water flow and physically trapping sediment. To assess the spatial distribution of water purification potential in the southeastern United States, we mapped the demand for purification as the total area of agricultural land and the supply of natural land cover in the flowpath over which water moves...

The Paso Robles groundwater basin (PR) encompasses approximately 500,000 acres and is located in the upper portion of the Salinas River watershed in the San Luis Obispo (SLO) and Monterey counties, Central Coast region of California (.\ancillary\Figures\Figure 1. Site Map.tif from this data release; California Department of Water Resources, 2003). Agriculture makes up a large part of the regional economy and agricultural water demand is the single largest component of total water demands in San Luis Obispo County (SLO; Fugro West, Inc and others, 2005). As such, future water supply sustainability is an important water management objective. To quantitatively evaluate long-term trends in groundwater levels, inflow,...

The occurrence of metals, such as lead and copper, in household drinking supplies can often be a result of the corrosion of pipes and joints in water distribution systems. One measure of the potential for water to cause corrosion is the Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) (Langelier, 1936). The LSI is a measure of the potential for water to deposit a mineral layer (scale) within a water distribution system that can inhibit the corrosion of pipes and joints. Negative values of LSI suggest mineral deposition is not likely to occur while positive values indicate conditions favorable to mineral deposition. Negative values of LSI might be indicative of conditions that lead to elevated concentrations of metals, such as...
