This data set provides the coordinates of plot centers, the area of each plot, plot type, and search history of the plot. Plots in this data set are linked through the combination of plot number and year provided in this file. Plot search history indicates if a plot was searched for nests. Plot shape and area has varied through time. After 1985, plot were selected by stratified random sampling, and after 1998 by simple random sampling from the area defined in ‘YKD Nest Plot Study Area Boundary.’ Plot shape has also varied but after 1998 was generally 1/4 by 1/2 mile.

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the YKD Coastal Zone Survey design transects from 1985 to present. The original transects were imported to this SQLite database structure and saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.YK_1985_Trans,” “main.YK_1986_Trans,” “main.YK_1987_Trans,” etc.). The aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. The inter-transect spacing in the low, medium, high, and very-high density strata varies so that areas with higher waterfowl density are surveyed more intensively. This R code (eggs.R) inputs the quality controlled nest card data and (1) performs additional quality control on the egg code data, (2) reformat the eggs data into a tidy file of egg observations, (3) summarizes egg data into yearly means of initiation and hatch date based on incubation model, and (4) writes csv files for tidy egg data (eggs.csv) and yearly nest stats (yearstats.csv).

In 2019 a pilot study was conducted to determine the feasibility of using distance sampling to estimate density and population size of goose and eider nests on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD). Distance sampling (Buckland et al. 2001) is a common and well-understood method to estimate wildlife population size or density, especially for sparse and hard-to-detect populations. A main advantage of distance sampling is that it accounts for imperfect detection and gives precise estimates for a given level of effort relative to other methods. This dataset, AirWin.csv, contains the raw transcribed bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey. Note that this dataset contains records of species that were omitted in the final, quality-controlled data (WinterSimplified.csv), due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design for those species.

This collection of 10 separate geopackages contains the survey areas of the 1968-2015 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys. The geopackages are named YYYY_AK_TRUS_Survey_Area.gpkg, where YYYY = survey year. Each year’s survey area consisted of a set of U.S. Geological Survey 1:63,360 scale quadrangle maps, where each map represented a potential sampling unit. The 1968-2005 surveys were designed to census the entire survey area, and thus all of the maps were surveyed in these years. The 2010 and 2015 surveys were stratified random samples (optimally allocated to minimize cost for a fixed variance); therefore, only a selected set of 100 maps were surveyed in these years. This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the YKD Coastal Zone Survey’s current four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage, ‘Sampling Intensity’ (“SI arc”) that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the nesting density of cackling Canada geese.

In the 1960s, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Alaska Region Migratory Bird Management (MBM-AK) developed a protocol for aerial Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) and Tundra Swan (C. columbianus) abundance surveys in Alaska that was used by several government agencies and private entities through 2015. This standardized survey protocol allowed data collected by these diverse organizations to be stored together in a common digital archival system called the Alaska Swan Database, which is maintained by MBM-AK. Currently, the Aviatrix software produces data that is recorded and associated with each trigger point, but does not connect data from the camera (i.e., camera name) to these records. In order to calculate area for each photo that contains STEI, we would like to know the altitude of that photo. Therefore, we need to combine the Aviatrix data for each trigger point to the photo name that was taken at that trigger point. Spatial data collected by the GPS in the Aviatrix triggerbox along with camera and computer clock data is assembled to align spatial data (altitude and position data) with the imagery, mainly in order to assign the correct altitude to the images to calculate ground area within the photo frame.To do...

2010_TRUS_Optimal_Allocation.xls and 2015_TRUS_Optimal_Allocation.xlsx are Excel files that were created and used by MBM-AK to to determine the survey area stratification and sample selection for the 2010 and 2015 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys. The 2010 and 2015 surveys were a stratified random-sample plot design with optimal allocation of sampling effort to minimize cost for a fixed variance.
