This data release contains the results of an isotopic mass balance approach to provide an estimate of the long-term average isotope ratios of NWM streamflow for the summer season (JJA) between 2000 and 2019 in the Western United States. The NWM-estimated long-term average isotope ratios are compared directly to 6426 stream stable isotope observations in 995 unique catchments. Quantified similarities and differences, in the form of p-values, provide useful information about important hydrologic processes. Significant p-values mean that the observed isotope ratio differs from the long-term average mass balance calculated isotope ratios and indicates that flows may be influenced by processes that are not accounted...

This data release documents three Microsoft Excel tables; one contains noble gas isotopic data, one contains data for understanding groundwater ages in the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and one that describe the data fields. Results described include raw noble gas concentrations, environmental tracer concentrations (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14, and chlorofluorocarbons), and mean age and age distribution. Noble gas isotopes (NobleGas) contain noble gas isotope concentrations measured for South Rim springs. Samples were collected in pinch clousure copper tubes (Weiss, 1968) and analyzed at the University of Utah Dissolved Gas Lab. Mean age and age distribution...

This data release describes one (1) Microsoft Excel table of lumped parameter models of groundwater age for groundwater discharging to the South Loup River, Nebraska. The table (LPMAgeResults) includes final models of groundwater age and metrics by calibration of lumped parameter models to tracer concentrations using TracerLPM software (Jurgens and others, 2012). Interpreted results presented here were used to guide hydrologic interpretations of groundwater sources and flow paths of groundwater discharging to the South Loup River, NE.

Understanding how changing climatic conditions affect streamflow volume and timing is critical for effective water management. In the Rio Grande Basin of the southwest U.S., decreasing snowpack, increasing minimum temperatures, and decreasing streamflow have been observed in recent decades, but the effects of hydroclimatic changes on baseflow, or groundwater discharge to streams, have not been investigated. The dataset created in this data release was used to help support a study to determine how trends in precipitation, snowpack accumulation, and snowmelt rate relate to streamflow, baseflow, and the hydrologic partitioning of baseflow and runoff at 12 sites in the Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) during 1980 to 2015....

The Star District study area is located in the Star Mountain Range, approximately 50 miles north of Cedar City, Utah. The Star Range was historically mined for lead and silver beginning in the 1870s (Krahulec, 2018). The Star District samples can be spatially clustered into two groups: the first consists of samples closest to Topache Peak and the second consists of samples closest to Picacho Peak. From November to December, 2014 and June to July, 2015, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) collected a total of 141 samples from abandoned mine wastepiles, channel sediments downslope of wastepiles, and background areas. These samples were sieved to obtain the less than 177 micron fraction, which was homogenized...

Total dissolved solids (TDS) in surface waters affect water quality and useability and are of particular concern in the Colorado River Basin. Estimates of current and past TDS concentration and flux in rivers support appropriate management and salinity control measures. In this study we estimated the total dissolved solid concentration and flux at 11 sites on tributaries of the Colorado River, starting as early as 1938 until 2021. Of these sites, eight were not affected by dams. For these we estimated daily and water year flow normalized TDS concentration and flux using the Weighted Regressions on Time Discharge and Season (WRTDS) water quality modeling framework. For the three sites situated below dams, we used...

NOTE: This data release has been deprecated. There is an updated version available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P94EKLPP. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model was used to aid in the interpretation of monitoring data and simulate streamflow and water-quality conditions in streams across the Southwestern Region of the Unites States. SPARROW is a hybrid empirical/process-based mass balance model that can be used to estimate the major sources and environmental factors that affect the long-term supply, transport, and fate of contaminants in streams. The spatially explicit model structure is defined by a river reach network coupled with contributing...

This dataset provides a modified version of the previously published Lake Powell topobathymetric digital elevation model (TBDEM; Poppenga and others, 2020). The original TBDEM is comprised of four source datasets: (1) a 2017 1-meter multibeam bathymetric survey; (2) a 2018 topographic light detection and ranging (lidar) derived digital elevation model (DEM); (3) a historical topographic DEM that was interpolated from contours maps created in 1947 and 1959; and (4) interpolated topography where gaps existed in the bathymetric and lidar data or where historical data were not suitable (Poppenga and others, 2020). For this data release, two corrections were made to the TBDEM to address errors associated with the historic...
