Index card: Southeastward view of the source area of the Madison Slide. This view shows several of the unbroken dolomite remnants. It was dolomite buttresses comparable to these which broke and resulted in the slide. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: Vertical photographs taken of the Madison Slide shortly after the Hebgen Lake Earthquake. The slide appears as a large, irregular mass with one edge extending into the Madison Canyon and damming the Madison River to form Earthquake Lake. The left edge of the slide (the northwest side) appears as a sinuous light-gray line which represents the shattered dolomite boulders which formed the leading edge of the slide. At the southern end of the line of the shattered dolomite boulders is the former valley of the Madison River, now devoid of water. The right side of the valley is formed by the dolomite buttresses which remained in place. The general flow pattern of the slide is clear. Hebgen Lake earthquake,...

View is northeastward and was taken from the hill just above Hebgen Dam, part of which shows in the lower left corner of the color transparency. Small abandoned boat dock is lodged on shore. Index card: Small private dwelling at the Lakeside resort. This is a small house (see also color transparency no. 54 (wij00054_ct)) which had begun to slide toward the lake at the time this picture was taken. The trees on the left side of the photograph are partly submerged by water and the thoroughly soaked sediments had begun to slump toward the lake. By rapid work, the workmen were able to move the house to a safer and higher site. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.
