We evaluated the expected success of habitat recovery in priority areas under 3 different restoration scenarios: passive, planting, and seeding. Passive means no human intervention following a fire disturbance. Under a planting scenario, field technicians methodically plant young sagebrush saplings at the burned site. The seeding scenario involves distributing large amounts of sagebrush seeds throughout the affected area.

We apply a monthly water-balance model (MWBM) to simulate components of the water balance for the period 1950-2099 under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for the Contiguous United States. We use the statistically downscaled MACAv2-METDATA temperature and precipitation data from 20 General Circulation Models (GCMs) from the Climate Model Intercomparison Program Phase 5 (CMIP5) as input to the water balance model. This dataset supports the USGS National Climate Change Viewer. The statistically downscaled dataset is: MACAv2-METDATA: Multivariate Adaptive Constructed Analogs (Abatzoglou & Brown, 2012, bias corrected by METDATA, Abatzoglou, 2013) Users interested in the downscaled temperature and precipitation files are referred to...

Using juvenile individuals of 3 species of carp (Family: Cyprinidae), we tested the potential for six amino acids to elicit an extracellular electro-olfactory response within the naris using gelatin-based electrodes. The amino acids L-alanine, L-arginine, L-aspartic acid, L-asparagine, L-glutamine, and L‑glutamic acid were tested on Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and Silver Carp (H. molitrix) to provide a comparison among amino acids both within and among species. Each row in the data set represents exposure to a single amino acid. Each individual fish was exposed to up to four amino acids sequentially in a random order, representing a trial; each individual was...

Amphibians are vulnerable to extinction owing, partly, to altered physiological processes induced by projected global warming and drying. Understanding the mechanisms behind their responses is essential to formulate adaptation strategies for their conservation. Puerto Rico harbors 15 endemic Eleutherodactylus frogs considered vulnerable to extinction due to poor vagility and sensitivity to environmental variability. Herein are reported the effects of four temperature treatments (15, 20, 25, and 30 degrees Centigrade) on metabolic rates associated with specific dynamic action (SDA) and standard metabolic rates (SMR) of four representative species of Eleutherodactylus employing a respirometer. All species in either...

These data were compiled for the creation of a continuous, transboundary land cover map of Bird Conservation Region 33, Sonoran and Mojave Deserts (BCR 33). Objective(s) of our study were to, 1) develop a machine learning (ML) algorithm trained to classify vegetation land cover using remote sensing spectral data and phenology metrics from 2013-2020, over a large subregion of the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts BCR, 2) Calibrate, validate, and refine the final ML-derived vegetation map using a collection of openly sourced remote sensing and ground-based ancillary data, images, and limited fieldwork, and 3) Harmonize a new transboundary classification system by expanding existing land cover mapping resources from the United...

Hurricane Sandy directly hit the Atlantic shoreline of New Jersey during several astronomical high tide cycles in late October, 2012. The eastern seaboard areas are subject to sea level rise and increased severity and frequency of storm events, prompting habitat and land use planning changes. Wetland Aquatic Research Center (WARC) has conducted detailed mapping of marine and estuarine wetlands and deepwater habitats, including beaches and tide flats, and upland land use/land cover, using specially-acquired aerial imagery flown at 1-meter resolution. These efforts will assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) continuing endeavors to map the barrier islands adhering to Coastal Barrier Resources Act (CBRA)...

A total of 200 soil samples were collected in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge in July 2019 for chronic wasting disease (CWD) monitoring purposes. To collect samples from locations where ungulates are most likely to be shedding or encountering CWD, we targeted elk collar data locations, known migration routes of mule deer and elk, and areas where yearly elk supplemental feeding generally occurs on the National Elk Refuge. We sampled 10 transects in Grand Teton National Park and 10 transects in the National Elk Refuge, each 1,000 meters in length. We collected soil samples every 100 meters along the transect for a total of 10 samples per transect. Terra Core...

We tracked Lake Trout and a small number Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout using acoustic telemetry (Vemco VR2W - 69 kHz) receivers and transmitters (Vemco V- series) in Yellowstone Lake from 2011 to 2016. This data set consists of the fish taqgging and recapture information. In total, 470 Lake Trout and 21 Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout were tagged with transmitters. Transmitters were surgically implanted into fish greater 405 mm total length. Fish were captured via line sampleing, anesthetized with Aqui-S, and tagged within a few minutes of capture. After recovering in freshwater for no more than 10 minutes, all tagged fish were released into Yellowstone Lake. While limited, recaptured fish information was reported to...
Field estimates of the abundance of rainbow trout in Washington and British Columbia were collected in concert with environmental DNA samples (eDNA) to evaluate if eDNA copy numbers correlated with abundance of trout. In addition, stream habitat data including channel units (pools, riffles), substrate, large woody debris, among others, were collected at sites.

This data release consists of four datasets that were used for evaluating winter drawdown patterns in 166 Massachusetts lakes greater than 0.3 km2 surface area. The first dataset (“Water area and level.csv”) provides water area and water level time series data of 166 lakes from 2016 to 2021. Water area and water level time-series data were derived from European Space Agency’s Sentinel 1 synthetic aperture radar satellite sensor using the JavaScript code in Google Earth Engine platform. Details of this code were described in the software release (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZA5I1U). The second dataset (“Water area interpolated.csv”) is the linearly-interpolated daily water area time series data of the 166 lakes from...

Here, we present greater sage-grouse nesting habitat suitability 15-years after simulating a fire and planting of sagebrush. The planting design used here reflects a single-year (maximum-effort; me) habitat restoration effort where we used several small (ss) patches with low density (ld) planting of sagebrush. The planting was not targeted for nesting habitat, and the data reflects simulated habitat conditions in 2030. To assess the degree to which transplanting sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) could quickly restore former sage-grouse habitat and the strategies by which greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter, sage-grouse) habitat restoration is best accomplished, we linked vegetation transitions with...

Genetic networks can characterize complex genetic relationships among groups of individuals, which can be used to rank nodes most important to the overall connectivity of the system. Ranking allows scarce resources to be guided towards nodes integral to connectivity. The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a species of conservation concern that breeds on spatially discrete leks that must remain connected by genetic exchange for population persistence. We genotyped 5,950 individuals, from 1,200 greater sage-grouse leks distributed across the entire species’ geographic range. We found a small world network composed of 458 nodes connected by 14,481 edges that are described here. The files associated...
The data include measurements of chlorophyll a and algal stoichiometry from benthic algae collected from Sky Pond, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, in 2015-2017; results of nutrient diffusion experiments in Sky Pond including chlorophyll a and other pigments to identify chlorophytes, bacillariophytes, and myxomycetes, and results of a laboratory incubation using benthic chlorophytes to identify ecosystem responses (nitrogen uptake, net primary productivity, ecosystem respiration, net ecosystem productivity, and dissolved organic carbon production) under nutrient and temperature treatments.
