This dataset contains geochemical and other information for 204 samples of produced water from the Fruitvale petroleum field. Produced water is water coexisting with oil and gas. The historical produced water chemistry data was compiled from preexisting datasets and scanned images into a numerical dataset to characterize produced water chemical characteristics. Each sample is identified by its API (American Petroleum Institute) number, excluding the state code, which is 04 in all California wells, latitude and longitude, well name, formation name, perforation interval, and date tested. The geochemical analyses include major ions, some minor ions, total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, specific gravity, resistivity, electrical...

This digital dataset contains historical geochemical and other information for 89 samples of produced water from 84 sites in the Santa Maria Valley Oil Field in Santa Barbara County, California. Produced water is a term used in the oil industry to describe water that is produced from oil wells as a byproduct along with the oil and gas. Additionally, 3 samples from 3 sites that represent source water used in support of oil production were included in this dataset, for a total of 92 samples and 87 sites, respectively. The locations from which these historical samples have been collected include 27 wells, 2 reservoirs, 10 storage tanks, and 49 unidentifiable sample sources. Well depth, perforation depths, and (or)...

This digital dataset contains historical geochemical and other information for 255 samples of groundwater from 41 wells located within 3-miles of the San Ardo Oil Field in Monterey County, central California. Data were compiled from preexisting datasets into two separate data files described as follows: 1) a summary data file identifying each well, it's location, basic well construction, the number of chemistry samples and period of record, and data sources; and 2) a data file of geochemistry analyses for selected water-quality indicators, major and minor ions, nutrients, and trace elements, plus parameter code and (or) method, reporting level, reporting level type, and supplemental notes. A data dictionary was...

This digital dataset contains historical geochemical and other information for 271 samples of produced water from 143 sites in or near the San Ardo Oil Field in Monterey County, central California. Produced water is a term used in the oil industry to describe water that is produced from oil wells as a byproduct along with the oil and gas. The locations from which these historical samples have been collected include 101 wells; three wells (DataSet_ID 118 ,125, and 130) are located outside of the administrative boundary, but closer to San Ardo (within 3 miles) than any other oil field, and therefore they were included in this dataset. Well depth and (or) perforation depths are available for 91 of these wells. Sample...

Total volumes of produced water disposed at percolation and evaporation ponds for the Midway-Sunset and Buena Vista Oil Fields, Kern County, California were estimated for 1959-2021. Data were compiled from state and local agencies’ databases, including the California State Water Resources Control Board GeoTracker, California Integrated Water Quality System (CIWQS), and Ponds Status Report (2019); the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) Well Production and Injection Database (1977-2017); and the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board Pond List (updated February 11, 2021). For pond disposal facilities that receive produced water from multiple sources, volumes were estimated from cumulative...
The USGS is working in partnership with California and federal agencies to answer the following questions about oil and gas development and groundwater resources: Where are protected groundwater resources? How close are oil and gas operations and protected groundwater, and what geologic materials separate them? Where is there evidence of fluids from oil and gas sources in protected groundwater? Where does evidence indicate no connections? When fluids from oil and gas sources are present in protected groundwater, what pathways or processes are responsible for observed transport? Have oil and gas operations as a whole contributed to water-quality changes in groundwater basins?

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during October 2016 along 1,443 line kilometers in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley near Lost Hills, California. These data were collected in support of groundwater salinity mapping and hydrogeologic framework development as part of the U.S. Geological Survey California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater program and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Program of Regional Monitoring of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production. Deterministic laterally constrained inversions of the processed airborne electromagnetic data were developed using the AarhusINV code implemented in Aarhus Workbench software. Inversion parameters were...

To determine aquifer characteristics, pneumatic slug tests were performed on selected zones and aquifers at a monitoring site near the Lost Hills oil field in the Southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County. On May 30th and 31st, 2018, pneumatic slug tests were performed at five monitoring wells located at the multiple-well groundwater-monitoring site LHSP (26S/21E-07J1 through –J5) near Lost Hills, CA in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. Data were collected using In-Situ LevelTROLL 500 30psig pressure transducers set to record the depth to water level below land surface at one second intervals. Computations were performed using Aqtesolv software and analyzed using the KGS Model package for overdamped slug tests performed...

Note: This data release has been revised. The updated version is available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9DR22GD. As part of the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Regional Groundwater Monitoring Program of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production, during September 2016–February 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey collected and analyzed groundwater and associated quality-control (QC) samples from 14 water-production wells located within a three mile buffer zone of and in the Fruitvale Oil field, Kern County, California. Samples were analyzed for water-quality indicators, major and minor ions, nutrients, trace elements, volatile organic compounds, naturally occurring radioactive material, geochemical...

This dataset consists of 119,494 lines of data consisting of idle well fluid level depth, auxiliary measurements, and well parameters from California oil and gas wells that were reported to the California Department of Conservation, Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM). The dataset was provided by CalGEM in March 2018 and includes measurements made from 1976 to 2018. There are 5 sets of operator-reported data: idle well fluid level depth (N=101,734), well clean out depth (N=8,402), depth of base of fresh water (N=108,216), well top perforation depth (N=93,569), and depth reached (N=15,756). These are associated with a well, defined by API number, well number, operator name, test date, township, section,...

This data release contains groundwater elevation data and the associated model/code used to create groundwater elevation surfaces in and around select oil fields in California. The data and model provided here are intended to supplement interpretative manuscripts. Specific study areas will be added as Child Items found in this data release. Groundwater elevations are usually collected from individual wells at discrete times. However, we are often interested in looking at a continuous surface of groundwater levels for a variety of reasons including to examine potential gradients, or directions of groundwater flow. Therefore, we created continuous space-time models of groundwater elevations using a Gaussian process....

This dataset includes geological and geophysical data from petroleum wells located in the North Coles Levee Oil Field, Kern County, California. The purpose of this dataset is to describe groundwater salinity trends and the related geological controls. These data are used in an interpretive manuscript that characterizes a salinity inversion (lower-salinities found below higher-salinities) in North Coles Levee Oil Field. The geophysical data were primarily extracted by selecting data points from scanned well logs; however, some of these logs were digitized in their entirety. The geological data were extracted by interpreting select geologic formations from geophysical well logs relevant to the accompanying manuscript....

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) compiled and digitized mud logs from oil and gas wells in the Oxnard Oil Field area. Scanned copies of the mud logs were downloaded from the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) online data and were digitized. Thirteen available mud logs associated with the Pliocene Tar Sand pool code (Vaca Tar Sand) were digitized. Mud-logging technology (mud logs) allows for identification and relative concentration measurement in parts per million by volume (ppmv) of light hydrocarbon gases (methane through pentane) occurring in drilling mud returned to the surface throughout the drilling process...
