The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) worked in cooperation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to document the August and September, 2017 Hurricane Harvey storm event in southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana. Hurricane Harvey was the most significant rainfall event in United States history in scope and rainfall totals since rainfall records began during the 1880s. From August 25 through September 1, 2017, some areas in southeastern Texas received more than 60 inches of rain; large areas received more than 40 inches of rain. This data release contains the flood inundation polygons, flood-depth rasters, mapped boundaries, and high-water mark (HWM) locations for the selected river basins, coastal...
This dataset contains a thematic [classified] image derived from supervised classification of WorldView-3 satellite imagery. This data release contains a geospatial thematic (raster) image derived from a supervised classification of WorldView-3 satellite imagery obtained during 2020–21. Arundo donax (Arundo cane, giant reed, or Carrizo cane), is an invasive bamboo-like perennial grass most common to riparian areas throughout the southwestern United States. Because it displaces native riparian vegetation, Arundo cane has greatly disrupted the health of riparian ecosystems in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico during the past 50 years. Arundo cane also has created border security problems along the...

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Grand River Dam Authority completed a high-resolution multibeam bathymetric survey to compute a new capacity and surface-area table. The capacity and surface-area tables describe the relation between the elevation of the water surface and the volume of water that can be impounded at each given water-surface elevation. The capacity and surface area of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees were computed from a Triangular Irregular Network (TIN) surface created in Global Mapper Version 21.0.1. The TIN surface was created from three datasets: (1) a multibeam bathymetric survey of Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees in 2019 (Hunter and others 2020), (2) a 2017 USGS bathymetric survey...

Temporal patterns in glyphosate and atrazine concentrations were measured weekly by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during the 2013 growing season in 100 small streams in the Midwestern United States. Concentrations also were measured every 2 days at a subset of 8 of the sites, all located in Missouri. Glyphosate was detected more frequently in urban streams than in agricultural streams, and at concentrations similar to those in streams with high agricultural land use in the watershed. In contrast, atrazine was detected more frequently and at higher concentrations in agricultural streams than in urban streams. This data release provides watershed characteristics and 2013 glyphosate and atrazine compound concentrations...

This data release contains compiled historical groundwater-withdrawal data for the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida from 1925 to 2018. Most groundwater-withdrawals were distributed to groundwater wells and separated into water-use categories of industrial, production wells, power generation, mining, domestic, irrigation, livestock or commercial. Groundwater-withdrawal data were obtained, where available, from existing database resources hosted by various State and Federal agencies. For Texas, data were obtained from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) from both existing Groundwater Availability Models (GAM), and from historical groundwater-withdrawal data....

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District and Fort Bend Subsidence District, constructed a finite-difference numerical groundwater-flow model of the northern Gulf Coast aquifer region for 1897 through 2018 using MODFLOW 6 with the Newton formulation solver to simulate groundwater flow and land-surface subsidence. Model parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis were conducted with PEST++ Iterative Ensemble Smoother software. The simulated results are described in the associated U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1877. The model archive provided in this U.S. Geological Survey data release includes all the necessary files to run the MODFLOW 6 model and...
The karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers are classified as major sources of water in south-central Texas by the Texas Water Development Board, and both are classified as major aquifers by the State of Texas. The purpose of this data release is to present the data that were collected and compiled to describe the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy within parts of Bandera and Kendall Counties, Texas, in order to help water managers, water purveyors, and local residents better understand and manage water resources. The scope of the larger work and this accompanying data release is focused on the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the outcrops and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers within...

The Edwards aquifer in south central Texas is one of the most permeable and productive aquifers in the United States and is the major source of public water supply for Bexar, Comal, Hays, Medina, and Uvalde Counties. The Edwards aquifer also supplies large quantities of water to agriculture, business, and industry in the region. The major artesian springs of the Edwards aquifer provide water for recreational activities, businesses, and downstream users, and provide habitat for several threatened or endangered species. The areas pertinent to the recharge process are the catchment area and the recharge zone. The catchment area consists of the parts of stream basins upstream from the recharge zone. Streams in the...

The Edwards aquifer is a karst aquifer system that is a primary water source for a large part of central Texas including the city of San Antonio, Texas. These vector geospatial data represent the geographic extent of the contributing zones for the Northern, Barton Springs, and San Antonio segments of the Edwards aquifer. The contributing zone is defined as the drainage area of the Edwards Plateau that contributes surface water to the Edwards aquifer recharge zone. The recharge zone is where surface water and precipitation infiltrate into the outcrop of the rocks that compose the aquifer (see Ashworth and Hopkins, 1995, and George and others, 2011). Consumptive use (CU) of water is an important factor for determining water availability and groundwater storage. Many regional stakeholders and water-supply managers in the Upper Rio Grande Basin have indicated CU is of primary concern in their water-management strategies, yet CU data is sparse for this area. This polygon feature class, which represents irrigated acres for 2015, is a geospatial component of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Census Upper Rio Grande Basin (URGB) focus area study's effort to improve quantification of CU in parts of New Mexico, west Texas, and northern Chihuahua. These digital data accompany Ivahnenko, T.I., Flickinger, A.K., Galanter, A.E., Douglas-Mankin, K.R., Pedraza, D.E.,...

The Triangle Chemical Company Superfund site, in Orange County, Texas, was a chemical mixing and blending facility in the 1970s. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), poor waste management practices resulted in soil and groundwater contamination and fish-kills in Coon Bayou (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2023). The Five-Year Review of the Triangle Superfund Site indicated groundwater in the upper water-bearing zone might be migrating off-site toward the southwest (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2016). There are concerns regarding potential risks to human health from contaminated soil vapor in existing or future structures in the area. To evaluate the status of volatile organic compound...
Note: This data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9A91W4Z This dataset provides numerical descriptions of 80 watershed characteristics for 1,703 watersheds with observed streamflow information at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow-gaging stations (gages). These gages are all located within the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico (east of the continental divide), but the watersheds extend outside of these boundaries. Characteristics are indexed by National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) version 2.2.1 Permanent_Identifier (PERMID; string that uniquely identifies each feature in the NHD) and USGS identification number for streamflow-gaging station (gage)....
