A three-dimensional groundwater flow model using MODFLOW-NWT was developed to evaluate historical and potential stream capture in the lower Humboldt River Basin, Nevada. The Humboldt River Basin is the only river basin that is contained entirely within the state of Nevada. The effect of groundwater pumping on the Humboldt River is not well understood. Tools are needed to determine stream capture and manage groundwater pumping in the Humboldt River Basin. Previous work has demonstrated that the river’s surface-water resource is sensitive to groundwater withdrawals, which have steadily increased since the 1950s for agriculture, municipal, and mining uses. A numerical groundwater flow model was developed for the purpose...

This polygon shapefile represents estimated flood-inundation areas in Grapevine Canyon near Scotty's Castle, Death Valley National Park. Estimates of the 4, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.2 percent annual exceedance probability (AEP) flood streamflows (previously known as the 25, 50, 100, 250, and 500-year floods) were computed from regional flood regression equations. The estimated flood streamflows were used with one-dimensional hydraulic models to compute water surface elevations that were mapped on a digital terrain model of the study area. Those locations where the water surface was higher than the land surface were defined as inundated. The inundation polygons are named by AEP flow (4, 2, 1, 0.5, 0.2-percent) and geometry...

A digital elevation model represented by a triangulated irregular network (TIN) was developed for proposed channel restoration at Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada. The TIN was derived from lidar (light imaging, detection, and ranging) of quality level 1 collected in April 2018 by Quantum Spatial (Quantum Spatial Inc, 2018) for the Bureau of Land Management. The DEM also includes points surveyed in August 13-16, 2019, using a real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS). The lidar data are not included in this USGS publication due to BLM data-release restrictions for this dataset. Contact Bureau of Land Management, Nevada,...
This point shapefile contains information on 476 locations surveyed using a single-base real-time kinematic (RTK) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) in Soldier Meadows, Black Rock Desert - High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area, Nevada, August 14-15, 2019. The points were collected at 30-second intervals at control points and hydraulic structures and 5-second intervals at topographic points throughout the study area. The points were used as vertical precision verification for lidar data, editing the triangulated irregular network in locations of dense vegetation and surface water, locating streamflow measurement sites, creating hydraulic structures in the hydraulic model, and determining...

Note: This data release has been revised. Find version 2.0 here: https://doi.org/10.5066/F75H7FH3. Groundwater withdrawal estimates from 1913-2010 for the Death Valley regional groundwater flow system (DVRFS) are compiled in a Microsoft® Access database. This database updates two previously published databases (Moreo and others, 2003; Moreo and Justet, 2008). A total of about 38,000 acre-feet of groundwater was withdrawn from the DVRFS in 2010, of which 47 percent was used for irrigation, 22 percent for domestic, and 31 percent for public supply, commercial, and mining activities. The updated database was compiled to support ongoing efforts to model groundwater flow in the DVRFS. References cited: Moreo, M.T.,...

This USGS Data Release supports USGS Scientific Investigations Report (SIR) 2017-5079. Following is the abstract from SIR 2017-5079: This report documents methodology and results of a study to evaluate groundwater discharge by evapotranspiration (GWET) in sparsely vegetated areas of Amargosa Desert and improve understanding of hydrologic-continuum processes controlling groundwater discharge. Evapotranspiration and GWET rates were computed and characterized at three sites over 2 years using a combination of micrometeorological, unsaturated zone, and stable-isotope measurements. One site (Amargosa Flat Shallow [AFS]) was in a sparse and isolated area of saltgrass (Distichlis spicata) where the depth to groundwater...

A three-dimensional, groundwater-flow model developed by Halford and Jackson (https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1863) was used to simulate effects of future (2020—2120) groundwater pumping on water levels and natural discharges in the Alkali Flat–Furnace Creek Ranch (AFFCR), Ash Meadows, Pahute Mesa–Oasis Valley (PMOV), and Pahrump to Death Valley South (PDVS) groundwater basins, southern Nevada and California. Four pumping scenarios were simulated, including a base case and scenarios A, B, and C. Scenarios were simulated from 1913 to 2120, with historical pumping occurring from 1913 to 2010, historical 2010 pumping rates projected from 2010 to 2020, and scenario pumping beginning in 2020. The base case projected 2010 pumping...
