High concentrations of uranium were detected in samples from wells used for domestic drinking water supplies in the San Joaquin Valley. Of 163 domestic wells sampled by the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP) and the National Water Quality Program (NWQP) in 2008-2015, 26 percent had uranium concentrations greater than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level (EPA MCL) of 30 µg/L, with 13 percent of the wells having uranium concentration between 100 µg/L and 450 µg/L. To evaluate the potential anthropogenic and geologic causes of these anomalously high uranium concentrations, Rosen and others (2019) compiled water quality and...
This Well Completion Report geospatial dataset represents an index to a subset of records available from the California Department of Water Resources' (DWR) Online System for Well Completion Reports (OSWCR). This version of the release contains data from about 255,000 well completion reports (WCRs) for water supply wells from Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Kern, Kings, Merced, Monterey, Nevada, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Tulare, and Yuba counties. A subset of WCRs for wells that are not water supply wells also are included. The California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and...
This data release was prepared as part of an agreement between the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to support the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Of the many components of that agreement there is a specific task requiring the Enhancement of Digital Well Completion Reports. Well-completion reports (WCRs) contain information about the wells, such as construction characteristics and lithologic data that is very valuable to SGMA. The data set presented here is a compilation of lithologic information transcribed verbatim from a subset of WCRs contained in the DWR Online System for Well Completion Reports (OSWCR). The format of the lithologic...

This digital dataset consists of monthly climate data from the Basin Characterization Model v8 (BCMv8) for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2) for water years 1922 to 2019. The BCMv8 data are available in a separate data release titled "The Basin Characterization Model - A regional water balance software package (BCMv8) data release and model archive for hydrologic California, water years 1896-2020" that accompanies the USGS Techniques and Methods report titled: "The Basin Characterization Model - A Regional Water Balance Software Package". The BCMv8 data are extracted from the state-wide data for the CVHM2 modeled area for water years 1922 to 2019. Climate data for CVHM2 are presented in two child...

This Well Completion Report geospatial dataset represents an index to a subset of records available from the California Department of Water Resources' (DWR) Online System for Well Completion Reports (OSWCR). This release contains water supply well records from Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Sutter, and Yuba counties. The USGS California Water Science Center GAMA project has provided additional attributes: top of open interval; number of open intervals; and various other identifiers such as public supply well number and USGS site number where they can be identified. In some cases, locations are georeferenced to finer resolution based on county APN or 911 geospatial datasets....

As part of the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program , the U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater and quality-control (QC) samples during September 2016–February 2017 from 14 water-production wells located within a one-mile buffer zone of and in the Fruitvale Oil field, Kern County, California. Samples were analyzed for water-quality indicators, major and minor ions, nutrients, trace elements, volatile organic compounds, naturally occurring radioactive material, geochemical and age-dating tracers, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved standard and hydrocarbon gases, and dissolved noble and atmospheric gases. In total, 235 constituents and water-quality indicators...

Managed aquifer recharge is a water-management strategy used to meet water demands during dry periods, or periods of high-water demand, when surface-water supplies are low. One method of managed aquifer recharge uses aquifer systems as subsurface reservoirs or ‘water banks’ to effectively and economically store surface water when surplus is available, and then recover the recharged groundwater to meet water demands during droughts. During these water shortages, increased groundwater pumpage can be used to offset shortfalls in surface-water supplies. Thus, surface-water reservoirs and water banks can be used conjunctively to effectively coordinate the use of groundwater and surface water. Data were compiled for ten...

This digital dataset contains the datasets related to agricultural and municipal water supply and groundwater in the Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models (LSVHM), including the Salinas Valley Operational Model (SVOM) and the Salinas Valley Integrated Hydrologic Model (SVIHM). Groundwater inflow and outflow data include reported groundwater pumpage and groundwater elevations obtained for the period from October 1, 1967, to September 30, 2018. Groundwater pumpage in the Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models is grouped into (1) pre-estimated and specified municipal and industrial (referred to as water supply) and (2) simulated pumpage from all irrigation wells used to supply water for irrigation (referred to as...

This data release documents chemical analyses of environmental samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Lakeport (Lake County, California) during July 11-12, 2022. Environmental samples were collected at selected sites to assess the effects of lead-based paint on soil chemistry. This sampling was made as part of a broader study to attribute sources of lead in soils in cooperation with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) for their Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Facility Investigation and Cleanup (LABRIC) program. Results of soil sampling and chemical analyses are included in the data-release component entitled "Soils chemistry from selected sites in Lakeport, Lake County, California"...

This data set contains information on zooplankton and associated environmental parameters for sampling conducted in the San Joaquin River and False River near their confluence at Jersey Point (Contra Costa County, California), during February-March, 2016. Macrozooplankton were sampled with vertical tows (bottom to surface) of a 50 cm-diameter conical plankton net that was 150cm long with 102µm mesh. Samples were preserved in the field in 10% formalin for laboratory processing that was conducted by a contractor (EcoAnalysts, Inc). Optical sensors measuring fluorescence of non-biological sources (e.g., dissolved organic matter, wastewater, hydrocarbons, fluorescent dyes, etc.; hereafter referred to as fDOM) are increasingly used in water quality studies because they provide proxy measurements for a variety of contaminants and constituents of concern including metals, wastewater effluent, and DOM (measured in the lab as dissolved organic carbon, (DOC)) concentrations. Similarly, sensors measuring biological (algal) fluorescence (hereafter referred to as chlorophyll (fChl) and phycocyanin (fPC), have gained popularity to measure phytoplankton concentration, biomass, and even primary productivity. As additional sensors are coupled with ongoing...

The Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models’ discretization data includes a shapefile of the model domain and layers and a shapefile of the water balance subregions. The Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models (LSVHM) include a historical model, the Salinas Valley Integrated Hydrologic Model (SVIHM) and a reservoir operations model, the Salinas Valley Operational Model (SVOM). While the Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models have different purposes, they have the same model extent and many of the same input datasets, including the discretization data included in this data release. The model domain for the Lower Salinas Valley Hydrologic Models includes the Salinas Valley groundwater basin and extends offshore to...
