To address the data and information gap for characterizing coastal drought, a coastal salinity index (CSI) was developed using salinity data (Conrads 2016; Conrads and Darby, 2017). The CSI uses an approach similar to the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), a readily available drought index that is widely used for monitoring meteorological droughts (McKee and others, 1993). The CSI substitutes total monthly precipitation with monthly mean salinity data to determine the probability of recording a given salinity value in a particular month. The initial investigation demonstrated that the index could be used to delineate short- and long-term drought (saline) and wet (high freshwater inflow) conditions; however,...

This dataset contains annual flow metrics quantifying drought and low streamflows for USGS GAGES-2 gages in the contiguous U.S. satisfying data completeness checks for the periods 1921-2020, 1951-2020, and 1981-2020. The dataset also contains annual climate variables from the USGS Monthly Water Balance Model (MWBM). The dataset provides trend analysis outputs for annual drought and low flow metrics for the periods 1921-2020, 1951-2020, and 1981-2020. Finally, we include six R language code files that were used to create the values included in this release as summarized in the process step section.

Stakeholder science needs were determined by reviewing more than 200 recently published literature items and web pages from Colorado River Basin (CRB) stakeholders. These stakeholder communications were used to characterize over 400 stakeholder science needs by reviewing their priorities, strategies, issues, missions, and concerns related to drought in the CRB. Members of the CRB Integrated Science Pilot Project team identified each of the stakeholder’s science needs and categorized the needs based on science themes and science topics that the needs address in the landscape. The terms used as science topics were initially created by Pilot Project team members but then later were cross-walked to match terms in the...

This metadata record describes a series of tabular datasets containing metrics used to characterize drought for select United States Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages for the climate years (April 1 – March 31) 1981 to 2020. These streamgages are a subset of those used in Geospatial Attributes of Gages for Evaluating Streamflow, version 2 (GAGES-II, Falcone, 2011) in the conterminous United States (CONUS). These metrics include streamflow percentiles, identified drought events, annual low streamflow, and drought statistics for each event.

Documented in this data release are data used to model and map the probability of arsenic being greater than 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells throughout the conterminous United States during drought conditions (Lombard and others, 2020). The model used to predict the probability of arsenic exceeding 10 micrograms per liter in private domestic wells was previously developed and documented by Ayotte and others (2017). Independent variables in the model include groundwater recharge and annual precipitation. In order to assess the impact of drought these variables were altered to simulate drought by reducing the 30-year average annual values by 25 and 50 percent. The impact of drought was also assessed...

This dataset adds attributes describing the self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) during the observation year of wet/dry streamflow observations collected in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Streamflow observation locations are linked to the nearest National Hydrography Dataset high-resolution (NHD-HR) stream segment to obtain stream order and stream permanence (perennial/non-perennial) from NHD-HR. Additionally, the PDSI and precipitation percentile for 7.5 minute quadrangle map extents, within the extent of the conterminous United States (https://carto.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/map_indices/MapServer), during the map survey year are presented. NHD perennial/non-perennial classifications derive...

These shapefiles represent the spatial distribution of mean annual groundwater recharge, in inches, for Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi for a set of water-budget scenarios that characterize unique combinations of drought and land-cover conditions. Two water-budget scenarios were developed to quantify the effects of severe drought and future climate conditions on groundwater recharge for each island as follows: (1) rainfall conditions representative of the driest conditions during 1920–2012 and 2020 land cover, and (2) rainfall conditions representative of the driest conditions during a future dry-climate condition and 2020 land cover. Each drought condition was combined with two hypothetical...

This metadata record describes outputs from 12 configurations of long short-term memory (LSTM) models which were used to predict streamflow drought occurrence at 384 stream gage locations in the Colorado River Basin region. The models were trained on data from 01-Oct-1981 to 31-Mar-2005 and validated over the period of record spanning 01-Apr-2005 to 31-Mar- 2014. The models use explanatory variable inputs described in Wieczorek (2023) (doi.org/10.5066/P98IG8LO) to predict daily streamflow and streamflow percentiles as described in Simeone (2022) (doi.org/10.5066/P92FAASD). Separate models were trained to predict daily streamflow and streamflow percentiles. Two types of percentiles were modeled: (1) fixed-threshold...

Tables are presented listing parameters and fit statistics for 25,453 maximum likelihood logistic regression (MLLR) models describing hydrological drought probabilities at 324 gaged locations on rivers and streams in the Delaware River Basin (DRB). Data from previous months are used to estimate chance of hydrological drought during future summer months. Models containing 1 explanatory variable use monthly mean daily streamflow data (DV) to provide hydrological drought streamflow probabilities for July, August, and September as functions of monthly mean DV from the previous 11 months. Outcomes are estimated 1 to 12 months ahead of their occurrence. Models containing 2 explanatory variables use monthly mean daily...

Tables are presented listing parameters used in logistic regression equations describing drought streamflow probabilities in the Northeastern United States. Streamflow daily data, streamflow monthly mean data, maximum likelihood logistic regression (MLLR) equation explanatory parameters, equation goodness of fit parameters, and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) AUC values identifying the utility of each relation, describe each model of the probability (chance) of a particular streamflow daily value exceeding or not exceeding an identified drought streamflow threshold.

This data release documents time-series analyses of aqueous-chemistry data from public-supply wells (PSWs) and associated potential explanatory factors to characterize responses of groundwater quality to drought and recovery periods in California’s San Joaquin Valley (SJV) during 2000-2022. Annual median nitrate values were computed for PSWs throughout the SJV during the period of study. Median annual nitrate values were calculated at all PSWs with available data in the SJV, resulting in a total of 698 PSWs with complete annual records after single-year linear gap imputation. A total of 237 of these records were classified as “low variance” because they contained proportions of identical values exceeding 80 percent...
