The Florida Geological Survey maintains a collection of paper documents associated with boreholes and hand specimens from throughout Florida. This collection includes all paper documents that can be considered archival documents or data sources, which are currently not in a collection of their own. In most cases, these documents hold information about boreholes and hand specimens within our sample collections; however, there remains a subset of the collection associated with boreholes outside of our sample collections that was deemed relevant at the time of acquisition for retention. These boreholes and their associated documents, were historically given a designation of a “wgi number.” During sample acquisition,...

Static metadata (current to June 2023) of Minnesota's borehole drill cuttings collection maintained by the Minnesota Geological Survey (MGS). This collection of over 6,400 sets of drill cuttings dates as far back as the late 1800s. The collection is stored in our soil lab at our office and is accessible to the public by appointment. Each borehole cutting set is assigned a MGS lab number upon arrival, processed and washed by UMN student soil lab workers, and stored chronologically in cardboard boxes. Each cutting set cardboard box contains multiple paper envelopes representing a sample taken at that depth. Each paper envelope contains ~100-200 grams of original sample and ~100 grams of washed sample processed by...

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Geologic Sections dataset consists of site-specific, large-scale geologic cross-sections (composite sheets). These sections were acquired from VDOT in order to save them from disposal. There are 5,500 geological profiles created for highway construction projects containing extensive core, auger and split-spoon logs at scales of 1:50 and 1:100 providing a unique record of subsurface geological and geotechnical data along roadways throughout Virginia. The thousands of feet of vertical subsurface data represents millions of dollars of investment in data acquisition by VDOT. The sections are useful as indicators of subsurface geology in large parts of Virginia. ...

The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) Geologic Map Database (MAPBIB) contains an inventory of approximately 2850 geologic maps covering various parts of Utah, that date from about 1890 to present, and that vary from formally published USGS and UGS Map and Bulletin Series maps, to informal consulting reports and internal unpublished ?sketch? maps. About half of these maps were published in production runs in which hundreds of copies were printed ? most of these maps are still widely distributed and readily available. However, over 1000 of the maps in our MAPBIB database were produced in only very limited numbers, are completely out of print, are in obscure or remote libraries, or are limited-distribution ?gray? literature...

Until 2007, when they transferred to the FDEP Division of Water Resource Management’s Mining and Mitigation Program, the Florida Geological Survey (FGS) had an Oil and Gas section who maintained a collection comprised of: permit application and compliance documents; well logs and well test data; monthly production data; and inspection photographs. Once stored in 54, four-drawer legal-sized file cabinets and organized by the permit number, the documents were scanned in batches and transferred back to the FGS. They are currently stored in rolling shelves organized by their scan batch numbers. Scanned documents that are not confidential are available on OCULUS (https://depedms.dep.state.fl.us/Oculus/), a CMS utilized...
