The Fort Collins Science Center Web Applications Team, the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis unit of the Core Science Systems Mission Area, and a North Central Climate Science Center/NCAR/NOAA partnership group collaborated on a set of automated tools to allow remapping of the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata standards to International Organization for Standardization (ISO) metadata standards. This project addressed the challenge of expediting the conversion of millions of metadata records in multiple USGS catalogs that run the risk of being left in a deprecated transfer format. The project set the stage for metadata conversions by: 1. Providing roadmaps and automated processes to remap FGDC...
The Center for Biological Informatics (CBI, now reorganized into the Core Science Analytics and Synthesis unit of the Core Science Systems Mission Area) and the Fort Collins Science Center Web Applications Team joined resources to integrate their respective Metadata Tool and ScienceBase system: Incorporated the CBI-developed Metadata Tool into ScienceBase metadata workflow. This work involved diagraming how several independently developed systems can work together to manage data in the USGS, and make it available to partners and the public. See the illustration of the USGS data management workflow from the 2011 CDI Annual Report (link in Resource section below). Designed and built a rich user interface client that...

Glaciers are a central component to the hydrology of many areas in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Glacier melt plays a crucial role in the movement of nutrients through a landscape and into the ocean, and the flow of water into streams that sustain many species. As air temperatures rise, increased rates of glacier melt may have significant impacts to the hydrology and ecology in these areas. This project aims to broaden our understanding of the role of glaciers in the hydrology of Alaska and Washington state and incorporate this knowledge into two types of models that simulate past and future scenarios of water flow. The project team aims to develop a public web portal to allow users to explore content, access...
The CDI Upload, Registry and Access Project was added as a core capability to ScienceBase, a data integration system sponsored by Core Science Systems. The following description is the abstract from the 2012-3874 USGS Fact Sheet: "As a leading science and information agency and in fulfillment of its mission to provide reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) ensures that all scientific data are effectively hosted, adequately described, and appropriately accessible to scientists, collaborators, and the general public. To succeed in this task, the USGS established the Community for Data Integration (CDI) to address data and information management issues...
