The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center developed a Monarch Relevant Land Cover data set covering the area of Canada. We used the 2010 land cover data set produced by the tri-national North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) and supported by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) that depicts year 2010 land cover across North America at 30-meter spatial resolution, and incorporated additional spatially-explicit information to develop this land cover map. Additional sources of information included 2004 railroad data provided by The Atlas of Canada and the CEC, 2017 roads data provided by Statistics Canada, 2017 protected areas data provided by the CEC, and 2016 Canada provincial/territory...
To help determine whether Hg had a causal effect on corticosterone, we investigated the impact of experimental Hg intake on the corticosterone stress response in captive juvenile loons. Juveniles were subjected to three different feeding regimes: 0, 0.4 and 1.2 µg Hg (as MeHgCL)/g wet weight (ww) fish. We then measured baseline and 30 min post-solitary confinement stressor corticosterone concentrations. The data set consists of times of blood draws and dietary Hg levels. Blood samples and data set were provided to the senior author for analysis.

To describe calling activity of Pseudacris crucifer in relation to temperature, precipitation, and wetland water levels, we programmed an acoustic recorder (Wildlife Acoustics) to sample seasonal amphibian calls remotely at study site SC4DAI2 in the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway from 2008 to 2012. We programmed the recorder to sample for five minutes at the top of every hour of every day from late winter/early spring through late summer. We used the Songscape option in Songscope software to generate annual summaries of all of our acoustic samples from SC4DAI2. Our model is a full-annual-cycle population model {hostetler2015full} that tracks groups of bat surviving through four seasons: breeding season/summer, fall migration, non-breeding/winter, and spring migration. Our state variables are groups of bats that use a specific maternity colony/breeding site and hibernaculum/non-breeding site. The sampling locations provided here were selected as a two-stage Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) sample (Stevens & Olsen 2004). The first stage of the GRTS draw used a master sample developed by the North American Bat Monitoring Program (Loeb et al. 2015) from a 10 x 10 km grid placed over the conterminous U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Each 10 x 10 km grid cell (hereafter, master cell) was assigned a GRTS rank by NABat. The rank represents the priority order in which master cells should ideally be sampled. Breeding common loons for the movement and foraging pattern study were obtained from lakes in central and northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Both adults of a territorial pair were fitted with archival geolocator tags (Model LAT 2500; 34.6 x 8.3 mm, 4.4 g; Lotek Wireless Inc.). A combination of adhesive and plastic cable ties were used to affix the geolocator tag to a modified lock-on aluminum leg band. Tags were programmed to collect daily location estimates for up to two years, tag temperature (0.02o C accuracy, ≤ 0.05o C resolution) at 30-min intervals, and pressure data (±1% accuracy, 0.05% resolution) at 20-sec intervals during daylight hours to document foraging patterns...

The dataset contains sequencing read counts of fish prey eDNA metabarcoding (using primers targeting the 16S rRNA mitochondrial gene) that were extracted from fecal and cloacal swab samples collected from common loons (Gavia immer) captured on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes, Crow Wing County, Minnesota during 2015-2106. Sample type (cloacal or fecal); loon identification, age, and sex; capture date and location; and prey detections for each sample are provided.

This data file is in long format, comprising time series of hunter abundance and behavior and duck abundance. Hunter information varies by administrative flyway (Mississippi and Central), whereas duck population abundance is summarized for both the Prairie Pothole Region and the continent. Duck information for the Prairie Pothole Region is for the U.S. portion only (Strata 41-49 of the May waterfowl survey) and for 12 duck species, mallard, American wigeon, blue-winged teal, canvasback, gadwall, lesser and greater scaup, green-winged teal, northern pintail, northern shoveler, redhead, ring-necked duck, and ruddy duck.

The concentrations of selected metals (mercury [Hg], lead, cadmium, selenium [Se], and aluminum) were determined in common loon (Gavia immer) blood samples collected from across a broad area of Minnesota. The observed pattern of loon Hg exposure was related to Hg concentrations in a standardized 12-cm whole organism yellow perch (Perca flavescens), based on fish Hg records from lakes throughout Minnesota, using the U.S. Geological Survey National Descriptive Model for Mercury in Fish.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused extensive injury to natural resources in the Gulf of Mexico, and Gavia immer (common loon) were negatively affected from the spill. The Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group funded the project Restoration of Common Loons in Minnesota to restore common loons lost to the spill. In 2020–21, study lakes in an eight-county region in north-central Minnesota were identified to focus project activities. This data set contains information on detections of anuran (i.e., frogs and toads) species at six different management areas in the midwestern United States from 2002 to 2012. From 2002 to 2005 anuran communities were surveyed during the day using multiple methods at individual study wetlands—visual encounter surveys, dip net surveys, and calling surveys using multiple observers in most cases. These data are comprised of geo-located breeding season occurrences of Blue-winged Warblers (Vermivora cyanoptera) and Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera) in North America, 1963-2021. These data were collated from eBird (Cornell Lab of Ornithology) and the North American Breeding Bird Survey (US Geological Survey).
These data and code were collected to support the development of a modeling framework that integrates local daily weather conditions and land cover with individual energetics and morphology to simulate mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and northern pintail (Anas acuta) migration across the Northern Hemisphere.The simulated birds move across a discretized landscape of 20 by 20 mile nodes. Provided data and code allow for a model to simulate avian migration from September 1st, 2019, through December 31st, 2020. There are 6 zip files included in this data release. 1.
