This data release contains relevant datasets used in the analysis for the Chesapeake Bay stressor identification project, for which results are described in Fanelli and others (2022). For this project, two existing information sources were compiled and summarized to identify key in-stream stressors reported by the scientific literature or through regulatory assessments to be likely affecting benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics in the Chesapeake Bay region: 1) the peer reviewed multi-stressor literature, in which the effects multiple in-stream stressors on benthic macroinvertebrate community metrics are simultaneously assessed; and 2) reported causes of biological impairment as listed by state or district...

Low-altitude aerial images were taken over an area of the Potomac River in Brunswick, Maryland using 3DR Solo unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) on October 22, 2019. The imagery was collected for the purpose of evaluating UAS assessment of river habitat data such as water depth, substrate type, and water clarity. Some photographs contain black and white targets used as ground control points (GCPs), which were surveyed by a field crew with a high-precision (GNSS) Global Navigation Satellite System and/or containing internal post processing kinematic (PPK) GPS system. This data release contains the csv files containing the latitude and longitude coordinates, in Universal Transverse Mercator Zone 18N referenced to the...

As part of a larger study examining stream conditions and the effect of Best Management Practices in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, thirty small streams on the Delmarva Peninsula were instrumented and monitored for gage height (water level), water temperature, and air temperature using Onset HOBO sensors from March to September 2022. In addition, two discrete discharge measurements were made at baseflow at each site. This data release contains four .csv files with time-series for gage height, water temperature, and air temperature for all thirty monitoring locations and a table of discrete discharge measurements and associated field measurement metadata: Delmarva_2022_Continuous_Air_Temperature.csv Delmarva_2022_Continuous_Gage_Height.csv...

This metadata record documents 2 comma delimited tables that support the journal article "Bank-derived material dominates fluvial sediment in a suburban Chesapeake Bay watershed" by Cashman and others, in review. They consist of a source and target dataset.
The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with American Rivers and other partners, conducted a monitoring program beginning in 2010 to track river response to a series of dam removals on the Patapsco River intended to restore anadromous fish habitat in the watershed. Dam removals included the November 2010 removal of the Simkins dam, a 3.3 m tall and 66 m wide dam, with a reservoir sediment volume of ~67,000 cubic meters. As part of the dam removal monitoring program, three USGS streamgaging stations were established in late 2010 along the mainstem of the Patapsco River to estimate flow and suspended sediment-transport for constraining sediment budgets. USGS 01589000 Patapsco River at Hollofield, MD was reestablished...

U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists completed a data collection campaign from the 25th of April to the 10th of June in 2022, using various methods to record geomorphic and habitat indicators throughout 30 streams on the Delmarva Peninsula. Field methods included GNSS surveys, gravelometer-based pebble count readings, visual assessments, and riparian analyses. This metadata record contains all raw observations from the campaign as well as numerous summary metrics to be used in model development. Those "model-ready" data can be found in Delmarva_Model_Deliverable.csv in the parent item, while the two child items containing raw in-channel observations and raw survey data. Attached to this release is a data dictionary...

This data release links habitat assessment sites to both the NHDPlus Version 2 and NHDPlus High Resolution Region 02 networks using the hydrolink methodology. Linked habitat sites are those compiled by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) during creation of the Chesapeake Bay Basin-wide Index of Biotic Integrity (Chessie BIBI) for benthic macroinvertebrates (https://datahub.chesapeakebay.net/LivingResources). The data set contains a unique sample identifier created by ICPRB, survey program, coordinates of sample, linked V2 COMID and HR Permanent Identifier, and information regarding uncertainty in the attribution. We strongly caution the use of sampling points with attribution uncertainty...

This data record contains a CSV file with spectral reflectance (420-2114 nm) for sediment samples collected from each of four source locations (cropland, stream bank, glaciolacustrine, and street dust) located across sites in the Northwestern US during prior studies. Data were collected in a laboratory setting using Spectrecology USB4000-VIS-NIR and NIRQuest512-2.2 spectrometers. The data contain spectra collected from sieved, non-sieved, dry and suspended samples from each sample source, as well as spectra for calibration standards. Explanation of fields in contained in the spectral properties data table are described in a data dictionary. Data on the physical properties of samples used in this study have been...

The dataset contains long-term and short-term summaries of streamflow alteration and measures of biological condition (fish multi-metric index). Streamflow alteration metrics include the magnitude, duration, frequency, and seasonality of high and low flow streamflow. Biological condition was estimated from the National Rivers and Streams Assessment and National Water Quality Assessment fish sampling programs. Using fish samples, a fish multi-metric index was calculated and categorized into altered versus non-altered fish communities.

This data record contains questions and responses to a USGS-wide survey conducted to identify issues and needs associated with quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of USGS timeseries data streams. This research was funded by the USGS Community for Data Integration as part of a project titled “From reactive- to condition-based maintenance: Artificial intelligence for anomaly predictions and operational decision-making”. The poll targeted monitoring network managers and technicians and asked questions about operational data streams and timeseries data collection in order to identity opportunities to streamline data access, expedite the response to data quality issues, improve QA/QC procedures, reduce operations...

This data release includes data collected in the pursuit of identifying pre- and post-colonial riparian ecosystems found throughout Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA. A single raster file is included, and represents a topological classification of the entire county according to a hydrologically conditioned Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Ten shapefiles are also included, nine of which represent the depths of various soil layers as identified by ground-penetrating radar for two detailed study sites within Anne Arundel County. A tenth documents the depths cored at both detailed study sites, and their spatial locations. Finally, twenty comma-delimited tables are included in this release with fifteen tables documenting...

This data set compiles regulatory information about river and stream impairments within the Chesapeake Bay watershed as part of a Chesapeake Bay watershed multi-stressor meta-analysis project. Data are contained in a single combined and name-harmonized dataset originating from a snapshot of the Environmental Protection Agency's Assessment and Total Maximum Daily Load Tracking and Implementation System (ATTAINS) obtained in Spring of 2020. These data were clipped to only waterbodies contained in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and were designated to be free-flowing (e.g., rivers and streams). This compiled dataset contains information on a waterbody's designated uses, parameter impairments, and potential sources of...
