A three-dimensional groundwater flow model using MODFLOW-NWT was developed to evaluate historical and potential stream capture in the lower Humboldt River Basin, Nevada. The Humboldt River Basin is the only river basin that is contained entirely within the state of Nevada. The effect of groundwater pumping on the Humboldt River is not well understood. Tools are needed to determine stream capture and manage groundwater pumping in the Humboldt River Basin. Previous work has demonstrated that the river’s surface-water resource is sensitive to groundwater withdrawals, which have steadily increased since the 1950s for agriculture, municipal, and mining uses. A numerical groundwater flow model was developed for the purpose...

This dataset consists of points representing selected well site locations and water-level measurements used by Lopes and Allander (2009) to develop autumn 2006 groundwater-level altitude contours for Smith and Mason Valleys, and the lower Walker River basin, Nevada. Since the publication of Lopes and Allander (2009), the positional coordinates and land-surface altitudes at selected well sites used to develop autumn 2006 groundwater-level contours in that report were updated as part of a 2022 U.S. Geological Survey study (Davies and Naranjo, 2022).

This dataset consists of a polyline representing a groundwater divide for spring 1972, Smith Valley, Nevada digitized from plate 2 of the 1976 publication: Rush, F.E.,and Schroer, C.V., 1976, Geohydrology of Smith Valley, Nevada with special reference to the water-use period 1953-72: Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Water Resources Bulletin 43, 43p.

These contours represent static groundwater levels based on depth-to-water measurements made at 165 monitoring wells during water years 2016-2020 in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada. For each monitoring well, the median groundwater-level altitude during the five-year period (2016-2020) was used for developing the groundwater-level contours. Depth-to-water measurements were collected by the USGS and the Nevada Division of Water Resources (NDWR).

This USGS data release presents tabular data and photos used to determine (1) the duration of flow, subsurface temperature, and concurrent infiltration along an ephemeral channel and (2) vertical change of soil moisture, texture, and pore-water chemistry in the unsaturated zone at selected locations. The data were collected to investigate the feasibility of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) for aquifer storage and recovery in Bedell Flat hydrographic area, Nevada. The supplemental data consist of 4 tabular datasets and time-lapse photographs of discharge events. Data in this release include: (1) Bird Springs channel site location information (tabular data), (2) Bird Springs channel stream stage and subsurface temperature...

This data release consists of a Microsoft® Access database and Microsoft® Excel workbook that contain water-level data and other hydrologic information for wells in and near areas of underground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site (currently called the Nevada National Security Site). The database provides information for each well (well construction, borehole lithology, units contributing water to the well, and general site remarks) and associated water-level measurements (measurement source, status, method, accuracy, and specific water-level remarks). Additionally, the database provides hydrograph descriptions that document the water-level history and describe and interpret the water-level hydrograph for each...

This data release (version 1.0, August 2018) consists of two files, a Microsoft® Access database and Microsoft® Excel workbook, that contain water levels collected from 1941 to 2017 and other hydrologic information for 904 wells in and near areas of underground nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Data and information in the database and workbook have been updated and are superseded by version 2.0 (December 2018) of the data release.

The groundwater discharge area (GDA) in Tule and part of Sevier valley represents the area where discharge from evaporation by open water or bare soil and transpiration from phreatophytic plants exceeds the volume of water contributed by precipitation. The GDA was delineated during field reconnaissance of the study area using techniques similar to those used in previous studies throughout Nevada and eastern Utah.

This dataset, created in support of USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2020-5075, Estimates of Groundwater Discharge by Evapotranspiration, Stump Spring and Hiko Springs, Clark County, Nevada, 2016-18, represents a Normalized Difference Vegetation Index calculated for vegetated areas in the Hiko Springs groundwater discharge area. Vegetated areas within the GDA are composed of phreatophytic shrubs interspersed with xeric vegetation and bare soil. The GDA was delineated by visual interpretation of 1-meter National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial imagery acquired in May of 2015. Areas of channel scour within the GDA resulting from a flood event in September 2015 were delineated from a 2016 1.84-meter...

Two-dimensional variably saturated heat and flow models (VS2DH) were used to examine seepage rates along the Birdspring drainage for the purpose of exploring the drainage channel for use in an managed aquifer recharge project. Six transect models were separately calibrated to sediment temperatures observed during episodic runoff events during water year 2017 and 2018. The models were calibrated to unsteady flow conditions, then estimates of seepage losses were made for steady state conditions assuming stage conditions associated with 4 cubic feet per second of imported water. This USGS data release contains all of the input and output files for the simulations described in the associated model documentation report...

The mean MSAVI image is based on two Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes representing midsummer conditions in 2007 and 2008. MSAVI was calculated for each image which were then combined by calculating the mean for each pixel in the scenes. The resultant MSAVI image was used to estimate vegetation assemblages (ET units) within a mapped groundwater discharge area.

This raster dataset represents groundwater-level change from 1970 to 2020 in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, Nevada, calculated using approach 2. For this approach, depth-to-water measurements from 53 monitoring wells, represented as point values, were differenced between 1970 and 2020. Point values of change were interpolated into a raster to calculate valley-wide groundwater-level change. Depth-to-water was measured at the same 53 wells in 1995, 2006, and 2020. Depth-to-water measurements for 1970 were calculated by interpolating groundwater-level contours and extracting point values at the monitoring well locations. Groundwater-level change was estimated using two methods (approach 1 and 2) to address groundwater-level...

This dataset represents one of three derived outlets or "pour points" for each 12-digit hydrologic unit (HU12) in the Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) snapshot delivered with NHDPlus V2.1. The three related pour point locations, each delivered in a stand-alone dataset, are: "from" (fpp) and "to" (tpp) points that identify the location where flow leaves the HU12 polygon based on a flow direction raster, and a third "vector pour point" (vpp) selected "upstream" used to identify flow confluences near the "from" and "to" pour point locations. The points are derived from the NHDPlus V2.1 flow direction rasters and the WBD snapshot delivered with NHDPlus V2.1. This metadata document describes the "vector" pourpoints (vpp).
