Wild waterfowl (family Anatidae) are reported as secondary transmitters of HPAIV and primary reservoirs for low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses, yet spatial inputs for disease risk modeling for this group have been lacking. Using geographic information software and Monte Carlo simulations, we developed geospatial indices of waterfowl abundance at 1 km resolutions for the breeding and wintering seasons for China, the epicenter of H5N1. Two types of spatial layers were developed: cumulative waterfowl abundance (WAB), a measure of predicted abundance by species, and cumulative abundance weighted by H5N1 prevalence (WPR), whereby abundance for each species was adjusted based on species specific prevalence values....

This data layer depicts the weekly estimates of the relative risk of avian influenza transmission from wild waterfowl to domestic poultry. These data represent an early phase of ongoing model development and the inclusion of additional parameters is upcoming.
This data layer depicts the relative susceptibility of poultry to the transmission of Avian Influenza from wild birds based upon poultry type and density for the contiguous United States.
This Data Release provides imagery data for the development of deep-learning models to recognize individual brook trout (n=435). Images were collected at the Paint Bank State Fish Hatchery (Paint Bank, VA) on August 9, 2021 using a GoPro Hero 9 camera mounted approximately 50 cm above a fish board. The Paint Bank State Fish Hatchery is operated by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.

This dataset contains records from implanted and not implanted temperature logging tags, body sizes of fish implanted with temperature logging tags, times the fish/tags were transferred from one temperature to another, and the time the temperature recorded by the tag equilibrated with ambient water conditions. Data were collected to compare thermal equilibration rate of temperature recording tags implanted in the coelomic cavity of lab reared brook trout to temperature recording tags not implanted in fish. Tagged fish and not implanted tags were moved rapidly between 8 C and 16 C and also subjected to slow (2 C per hour) thermal ramp.

Fish collection data for surveys made at 5 localities in Flat Creek, Dawson County GA, on 6 dates that spanned a 4 to 18.5-month period following a catastrophic fish kill caused by a chemical spill near the headwater origin on Flat Creek. The data are: locality descriptions, water depth and velocity measurements made during fish sampling, and tabulated numbers and range in body length of individuals observed, by collection date and locality.

While small unmanned aerial systems (UAS) present a unique opportunity to survey avian populations while limiting disturbance, relatively little is known about how this method compares with more traditional approaches. In this study we compared population estimates of a mixed-species egret colony in the Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, USA) derived from UAS photo counts, flush counts, flight-line surveys, and in-colony nest counts along with the time required to derive an estimate via each approach. These data support a larger USGS manuscript.

This data release provides models detailing previous efforts to understand the distribution of domestic poultry throughout China. These data support a previous USGS publication.

While nest attentiveness plays a critical role in the reproductive success of avian species, little is known regarding the nest attentiveness patterns of many species during incubation. However, improvements in both video monitoring and temperature logging devices present an opportunity to improve our understanding of this aspect of avian behavior. To evaluate the ability of these technologies to document fine scale behaviors during incubation we monitored 13 nests across two Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) breeding colonies with a paired video camera - temperature logger approach, while monitoring 63 additional nests with temperature loggers alone. We also monitored nests and recorded hatching success, allowing us...

This data release contains model outputs depicting the probability of an H5 or H7 avian influenza outbreak at any given point in the continental United States for each week of the year.

We conducted a field experiment at the Moneystump Swamp in the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Dorchester, MD, USA to simulate a natural forest disturbance event (e.g., storm-induced flooding) by inducing the death of established trees (coastal loblolly pine, Pinus taeda) at the marsh-upland forest ecotone. There were three treatment components: Cut- where the trees were cut and removed, Girdled- where the bark was stripped from the base of the trees killing them and leaving them standing, and Control- where the trees were left alive. After this simulated disturbance in 2015, we monitored changes in vegetation along an elevation gradient in control and treatment areas to determine if disturbance can lead...

This Data Release provides stream temperature data (13 sites) and fish community data (3 sites) in Big Hunting Creek, Maryland. Data were collected during summer baseflow conditions in 2023. This product supports brook trout conservation and restoration research needs identified by Maryland Department of Natural Resources. We collected temperature data with Onset ProV2 water temperature gages in slotted PVC housings mounted to the stream substrates with rebar. Gages recorded temperature every 15 minutes from July 11, 2023 (midnight) until July 15, 2023 (midnight) (337 observations per site). We collected fish community data following Maryland Department of Natural Resources protocols (Maryland Biological Stream...

This data layer depicts the weekly relative effective waterfowl populations across the United States based upon predicted abundance and viral prevalence by species. These data have been produced to allow for visualization of how different factors impact transmission risk and may be advanced in future iterations to include additional species.

We collated existing quantitative data on avian dietary composition of 58 waterbird species that make use of the Chesapeake Bay. From this database, we quantified the relative importance of forage taxa to the diets of each waterbird species. This data will enable us to develop a comprehensive suite of forage taxa indicators whose abundance and distributions can be monitored as a proxy for Chesapeake Bay ecosystem health. These data support a paired USGS authored publication.

This is a Data Release containing conductivity and water temperature data for selected springs in the headwaters of the Potomac River basin. This work is supported by USGS Chesapeake Bay studies.

In an effort to facilitate research into the period between fledging and first breeding of juvenile terns we examined the impact of various combinations of harness types (backpack, leg-loop, and 3D printed harnesses), harness materials (Conrad-Jarvis automotive ribbon, Stretch Magic elastic thread, and Teflon ribbon), and transmitter types (CTT LifeTag and Lotek Nanotag) on a surrogate for juvenile terns, 28 day-old Japanese Quail (Coturnix japonica. This species was selected due to similarities in adult mass and downy feathering of juveniles), in a 30-day experiment. We monitored for abrasion at points of contact and tag gap issues via daily exams while also recording mass and wing cord as indices of growth. This...

These data, which support a USGS authored manuscript, describe how active and previous previous infection with avian influenza impacts the movement ecology of several wild waterfowl species that overwinter in California. Results varied by species and demonstrate that the relationships between avian influenza infection and wild bird movements are context- and species-dependent.

This data release links fish survey data from a suite of programs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed to the NHDPlus High Resolution Region 02 networks, hereafter referred to as NHDPlusHR. The data set contains site name, survey program, coordinates of sample, ancillary information such as sample date and site location information where available, and HR Permanent Identifier. It also includes a confidence classification category for each of NHD assignment based on a set of pre-determined rules. In total there were 15 confidence categories ranging from high confidence to low confidence. We caution the use of sampling points which were given anything other than "high" confidence in their assignment to a given NHD catchment/flowline...
This is a data release for models indicating suitable habitat for waterfowl at a 1km resolution across China. Faced with limited data, we built species distribution models using a habitat suitability approach for China’s breeding and non-breeding waterfowl. An extensive review of the literature was used to determine model parameters for habitat modeling. Habitat relationships were implemented in GIS using land cover covariates. Wintering models were validated using waterfowl census data, while breeding models, though developed for many species, were only validated for the one species with sufficient telemetry data available. We developed suitability models for 42 waterfowl species (30 breeding and 39 wintering)...
