These BioLake raster data provide global estimates (~10.0 x 12.4 km resolution) of twelve bioclimatic variables based on estimated lake temperature. Eleven of these twelve variables (BioLake01 - BioLake11) are estimated for each of three lake strata: lake mix (surface) layer, lake bottom, and total lake water column. These eleven variables correspond to CHELSA (Climatologies at high resolution for the earth's land surface areas) bioclimatic variables BIO1 - BIO11, except that these BioLake variables are based on lake water temperature and CHELSA BIO1 - BIO11 variables are based on air temperature. CHELSA BIO is also calculated a finer spatial resolution (~1 x 1 km). The twelfth variable (BioLake20; months with non-zero...
These data include dissolved silicon concentration and yield from 60 rivers across North America, the Caribbean, and Antarctica from 1964-2021 and are associated with the publication “Long-term change in concentration and yield of riverine dissolved silicon from the poles to the tropics”. Data were compiled from multiple public sources including the Long-term Ecological Research Network, Great Arctic Rivers Observatory, Upper Mississippi River Restoration program, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Concentration and yield estimates were generated by the Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge and Season model (WRTDS; Hirsch et al. 2010). The dataset includes six files: discrete dissolved silicon data and daily discharge...

Isoëtes are iconic but understudied wetland plants, despite having suffered severe losses globally mainly because of alterations in their habitats. We therefore provide the first global, comprehensive data set of aquatic Isoëtes and their habitats. We compiled a global database that includes all known environmental data collected from 1935 to 2023 regarding aquatic Isoëtes. This resulted in 2,179 records. The environmental data taken at Isoëtes' sampling stations varied but may include measures of water quality, water depth, and substrate composition.
Floodplain forest species are presumed to interact strongly with the environment, as evidenced by pronounced spatial variation in flood-driven abiotic constraints and forest composition. These data describe functional diversity and environmental characteristics for 156 forest assemblages sampled on floodplain landforms within transects from the lower peninsula of Michigan. The functional diversity of each assemblage is characterized by two metrics of functional richness (Convex Hull Volume/CHV and Trait Onion Peeling/TOP), one metric of functional dispersion (FDis), and community weighted mean functional trait values. Functional diversity metrics were calculated from 12 quantitative and qualitative functional traits...
These data were collected as part of a study headwater streams of the lowland Brazilian Amazon to assess the effects of land use change on organic matter dynamics (OM), ecosystem metabolism, and nutrient concentrations and uptake (nitrate and phosphate) in 11 first order streams draining forested (n=4) or cropland (n=7) water-sheds with intact riparian forests. Data included here are from 10 streams, were collected from 2015-2018, and are associated with the publication “Land use change influences ecosystem function of headwater streams of the lowland Amazon Basin”. The full dataset is comprised of five individual datasets: land cover and physical characteristics of all streams included in the study; monthly terrestrial...
This dataset includes information from 59 prairie pothole wetlands in Minnesota, collected in 2019 and 2020. The data includes wetland characteristics (e.g., size, depth, plant biomass, and water quality), multiple fish metrics, and multiple amphipod metrics. The amphipod species include Gammarus lacustris and Hyalella azteca. There are 22 species of fish recorded.
Various datasets used in support of research looking into complex interactions among river-valley morphology, basin size, and flow-event magnitude structure the physical template of floodplain ecosystems.
River valley boundary extents were generated for select large river floodplains of the Upper Midwest, United States. These polygons were delineated using a method that incorporated interpolating a water surface elevation that completely over-topped water-control structures within the valley such as levees, flood walls, and roadways. The intersection of this derived water surface and land elevation at the outermost edge of the floodplain was used to delineate the approximate extent of the river valley boundary. We used best professional judgment to approximate this water surface elevation. River transects were generated at 1-mile increments across select large river floodplains of the Upper Midwest, United States....
This dataset includes monthly dissolved silicon (DSi) concentration data from 198 rivers across the Northern Hemisphere. Concentration and discharge data were sourced from public and/or published datasets and the Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge, and Season model (Hirsch et al. 2010) was used to estimate monthly concentrations and flow-normalized concentrations for all sites over their period of record. Sites span eight climate zones, ranged from 18 degrees N to 70 degrees N, and vary in drainage area from < 1 km2 to nearly 3 million km2. These monthly concentration data were then used to cluster sites into average (i.e., average of all years) and annual (i.e., each year individually) seasonal regimes using...
Statistical inferences play a critical role in ecotoxicology. Historically, Null Hypothesis Significance Testing (NHST) has been the dominant method for inference in ecotoxicology. As a brief and informal definition of the NHST approach, researchers compare (or “test”) an experimental treatment or observation against a hypothesis of no relationship or effect (the “null hypothesis”) using the collected data to see if the observed values are statistically “significant” given predefined error rates. The resulting probability of observing a value equal to or greater than the observed value assuming the null hypothesis is true is the p-value. Criticisms of NHST have existed for almost a century and more recently these...

This dataset includes average, and annual average (e.g., average of 2020) watershed characteristics and environmental driver data for 189 rivers across the Northern Hemisphere. Average data includes lithology (e.g., percent of watershed covered by volcanics), land use (e.g., percent of watershed covered by cropland), maximum day length, median nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, maximum watershed proportion of snow covered area, precipitation, temperature, evapotranspiration, green-up day, net primary productivity, 5th percentile discharge, 95th percentile discharge, day of minimum discharge, day of maximum discharge, and coefficient of variation of discharge. Average data includes maximum watershed proportion...
Each text file describes coupled climate and land use scenarios used to model species distributions under different greenhouse gas emissions trajectories and time periods. Three different greenhouse gas emissions trajectories (representative concentration pathways [RCPs]), were used as the basis for future scenarios, including the 2.6 (low emissions), 4.5 (medium-low emissions) and 8.5 (high emissions) W/m2 RCPs (IPCC 2013). Three GCMs were selected based on two criteria: 1) high performance in hindcasting climate variables for the study area (Sheffield et al. 2013), and 2) to encompass the full range of variability across future climate projections from all available GCMs (Knutti et al. 2013, Maloney et al. 2014)....

From 2017-2019, the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) analyzed microcystin concentrations in samples collected from three different studies. The first study was on the movement and distribution of invasive carp (Bighead Carp, Silver Carp, Grass Carp) in the upper Mississippi River between lock and dam 16 and lock and dam 19. Samples were collected from May through October of 2017 and 2018 from backwaters, impounded areas and main channel areas in this reach of the Mississippi River. The second study was a nutrient and metal amendment study performed on natural phytoplankton communities from Lake Erie and Lake Michigan. This was a laboratory study where natural phytoplankton communities were incubated...

Riverine silicon (Si) plays a vital role in governing primary production, water quality, and carbon sequestration. The Global Aggregation of Stream Silica (GlASS) database was constructed to assess changes in riverine Si concentrations and fluxes, their relationship to available nutrients, and to evaluate mechanisms driving these patterns. GlASS includes dissolved Si (DSi), dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus concentrations at daily to quarterly time steps, daily discharge, and watershed characteristics for rivers with drainage areas ranging < 1 km2 to 3 million km2 and spanning eight climate zones, mainly in the northern hemisphere. Data range between years 1963 and 2023. GlASS uses...
