The data release includes data from four studies: (1) toxicity of a permitted effluent, which entered the Deep Fork River (DFR), Oklahoma, USA, to a unionid mussel (Lampsilis siliquoidea) and to 2 standard test species (cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia; and fathead minnow Pimephales promelas) in short-term 7-d effluent tests; (2) relative sensitivities of the 3 species to potassium (K), an elevated major ion in the effluent, using 7-d toxicity tests with KCl spiked into a DFR upstream reference water; (3) potential influences of background water characteristics on the acute K toxicity to the mussel (96-h exposures) and cladoceran (48-h exposure) in 4 reconstituted waters that mimicked the hardness and ionic composition...
In this experimental series we studied the swimming capabilities and response of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) larvae to flow turbulence in a laboratory flume. We compared three different experimental configurations, representing in-stream obstructions commonly found in natural streams (e.g. a gravel bump, a single vertical cylinder, and patches of submerged rigid vegetation). Grass carp larvae (post gas bladder emergence) were introduce to each experimental configuration and subjected to a variety of hydrodynamic forces of different magnitudes and scales. We varied the flow velocities and water depths and found threshold values of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses that triggered an apparent...

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency conducted observations onboard commercial fishing vessels. During these observations total lengths were collected from a subset of that capture which we have used to develop a length-based stock assessment of invasive carp. The first dataset represent harvest from the invasive carp harvest program in Kentucky and Tennessee from 2009-2021 only in Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake where the majority of harvest occurs. The second data are length data from a subset of those fish harvested in 2018-2021. The last dataset are the results from a survey delivered to fishers participating in the invasive carp harvest program in Kentucky...

Saline tidal wetlands are important sites of carbon sequestration and produce negligible methane (CH4) emissions due to regular inundation with sulfate-rich seawater. Yet, widespread management of coastal hydrology has restricted vast areas of coastal wetlands to tidal exchange. These ecosystems often undergo impoundment and freshening, which in turn cause vegetation shifts like invasion by Phragmites, that affect ecosystem carbon balance. Understanding controls of carbon exchange in these understudied ecosystems is critical for informing climate consequences of blue carbon restoration and/or management interventions. Here we present measurements of net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane, along...

Surface water samples were collected from four stream/agricultural drain sites in the Sacramento Valley of California to measure pesticides commonly applied to rice. Samples were collected weekly from May through August 2010 to capture the rice pesticide application season. Water samples were filtered (0.7 µm) and extracted via solid-phase extraction. Additionally, the filter paper was solvent extracted to measure suspended sediment-associated pesticides. Both fractions were analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. A total of 89 pesticides and pesticide degradates were measured in the dissolved water phase, while 14 pyrethroid insecticides were measured in the suspended sediment-associated fraction (pyrethroids...

This data describes the relative luminescence units and relative fluorescence units of lysates of two estrogen responsive chemically-activated luciferase expression human breast VM7Luc4E2 and VM7LucERbc9 cells which were exposed for 24 hours to estrone and 17beta-estradiol dilutions alone and in mixture with atrazine or water extracts collected from dilutor tanks during a fish exposure study utilizing estrone and atrazine. The data for corresponding measurements of estrone in the water extracts by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry are also shown. This data also describes relative fluorescence units of bovine serum albumin standards which were used to convert the relative fluorescence units of the cell lysates...

This dataset documents the number of normally developed hatched free embryos, abnormally developed hatched free embryos, and viable unhatched embryos from two laboratory trials (shovelnose sturgeon during April and pallid sturgeon during May 2016) in substrate conditions designed to simulate potential fates within a dynamic riverine environment. Trials were performed with substrate treatments that consisted of clean glass (control), gravel, medium-coarse sand, and fine sand-silt. Medium-coarse sand and fine sand-silt substrates were each tested three ways: unburied, partially buried, and fully buried (1–2 millimeter depth). Pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon embryos were exposed to trial conditions from the...

The data set contains sampling data, catch data, and biological data associated with a broad-scale experiment to examine free embryo dispersal and larval settlement of endangered pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) in the Missouri River of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. On 20190701, two age groups of pallid sturgeon including 771,707 1-day post-hatch (dph) free embryos and 200,786 5-dph free embryos were released in the Missouri River where dispersal in the water column was assessed through 150 miles. Following dispersal, beam trawl sampling of benthic habitats was conducted to verify settlement and quantify the spatial extent of settlement. Trawling was conducted for nine consecutive weeks from 20190716...

Data describe a designed environmental DNA (eDNA) survey for the detection of Spectaclecase (Cumberlandia monodonta, also referred to as Margaritifera monodonta) from field collected water samples. Parameters described include the limit of detection and limit of quantification of the assay; a list of freshwater mussel species tissue samples that were used to test specificity of the assay; and field collected water samples that were tested to detect the presence of Spectaclecase DNA. Samples were collected from sites on the Big Piney River, Missouri from 2020 to 2022.

In association with a project to estimate stream habitat use by two fish species; habitat parameters where slimy sculpin and rainbow trout were captured were recorded. Habitat use was observed using a backpack electrofisher in order to determine where fish were residing. Total stream habitat was calculated using equally spaced transects with observational recording of stream water depth, stream velocity, vegetative cover, and stream bed substrate composition. Comparisons of habitat use between the two species were analyzed using several statistical programs to infer competition or segregation.

Approximately 43 million people (about 14 percent of the U.S. population) rely on domestic wells as their source of drinking water. Unlike community water systems, which are regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, there is no comprehensive national program to ensure that the water is tested to ensure that is it safe to drink. A study published in 2009 from the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey that assessed water-quality conditions from 2,100 domestic wells within 48 states reported that more than one in five (23 percent) of the sampled wells contained one or more contaminants at a concentration greater than a human-health benchmark. In addition, there are many activities,...

The exposure of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to lead and cadmium and the potential associated toxic effects were examined at three sites contaminated with lead in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District and at a reference site. Mice from the contaminated sites showed evidence of oxidative stress and red-blood cell δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity was depressed by an average of 68% at the most contaminated site. However, histological examinations of the liver and kidney, cytologic examination of blood smears and biomarkers of lipid peroxidation and DNA damage failed to show evidence of toxic effects from lead. The biomagnification ratio of cadmium (hepatic concentration/ soil concentration)...
