These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This point data set contains streamflow-measurement sites in the Elkhorn and Loup River basins and selected streamflow-measurement sites in the Niobrara and Platte River basins in north-central Nebraska. At these 531 sites, flows ranging from no flow to 2,600 cubic feet per second were measured or observed during November 8 to 21, 2006. Measurements were made by several different methods, including current meters, flumes, and acoustic...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. Baseflow is the portion of streamflow derived from groundwater flow. It is an important component of the groundwater budget, and can be estimated using known total streamflow at given points through time. Daily streamflow data was collected from 25 streamflow gaging stations across the northern High Plains Groundwater Availability Study (NHPGAS) area from the National Water Information System (NWIS) and the Nebraska Department of...
This data release includes a polygon shapefile of grid cells attributed with values representing the simulated base-flow, evapotranspiration, and groundwater-storage depletions as a percentage of hypothetical well pumpage for the 2011-2060 time period. Depletions were simulated by the Phase-Three Elkhorn-Loup Model (ELM), constructed using MODFLOW-NWT (Niswonger and others, 2011). Each polygon represents one model grid cell, with pumping specified from either layer one or layer two of the model. All values are estimates and approximations. The phase three ELM simulated the High Plains aquifer in north-central Nebraska from predevelopment (pre-1895) through 2060 (Flynn and Stanton, 2018). The simulation was calibrated...

This data set contains 2,611 water levels collected by Natural Resources Districts in Central Nebraska. These water levels were collected by the districts to monitor groundwater levels within the districts. The water levels were provided to the USGS for use as calibration targets to the Elkhorn and Loup River Basin - Phase Three groundwater flow model. The water levels have not been previously published. This record serves as the publication record of the water levels in support of the Elkhorn and Loup River Basin - Phase Three groundwater flow model report.

Depletions were simulated by the Phase-Two Elkhorn-Loup Model (ELM), constructed using MODFLOW-2005 (Harbaugh, 2005) with the Groundwater Vistas, version 5, software (Environmental...

Sandbars of large sand-bedded rivers of the Central U.S. serve important ecological functions to many species, including the endangered Interior Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) (ILT). ILT are colonial birds which feed on fish and nest primarily on riverine sandbars during their annual breeding season of approximately May through July, depending on region. During this time, ILT require bare sand of sufficient elevation so as not to be inundated during the period between nest initiation and fledging of hatchlings. ILT were originally listed as endangered due in part to decreases in available sandbar habitat from river channelization and impoundment. Sandbars in Central U.S. rivers used by ILT are highly dynamic,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) refined the spatial and temporal discretization of a previously modeled area (Phase 1: https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2008/5143/ and Phase 2: https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2010/5149/) which focused on a 30,000-square-mile area of the High Plains aquifer. Regional groundwater-flow models were constructed to evaluate the effects of groundwater withdrawal on stream base flow in the Elkhorn and Loup River Basins, Nebraska. The model was calibrated to match groundwater level and base-flow data from the stream-aquifer system during the pre-1940 through 2010 period (including predevelopment [pre-1895], early development [1895–1940], and historical development [1940 through 2010] conditions) using...
