The U.S. Geological Survey Central Energy Science Center (CERSC) was asked to provide allocations of oil and gas resources and numbers of potential wells calculated from these allocated resources for the BLM Carlsbad Planning Area in New Mexico. The resource allocations were based on the most current USGS assessment of continuous (unconventional) oil and gas resources within eleven geologically defined assessment units in the Delaware Basin (Gaswirth and others, 2018).

Situated in a remote corner of northwestern New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park (CCNHP) was once the center of a sophisticated social, political and architectural civilization with a 50,000-square mile sphere of influence. The park protects the greatest concentration of Chacoan historical sites in the American Southwest and is arguably the most significant prehistoric site in North America. Following decades of unsuccessful attempts to develop usable near-surface water sources, the National Park Service constructed a 3,100-foot deep well into the Gallup Sandstone aquifer in 1972, providing the park with the first reliable drinking water source since it was established in 1907. The ~100-foot thick...
This child page contains FracFocus Fluid Data regarding the volume of water used during the hydrualic fracturing of oil wells for the Permian Basin, New Mexico and Texas, 2009-2019, for use as input data for the model associated with the Scientific Investigations Report "Estimates of Water Use Associated with Continuous Oil and Gas Development in the Permian Basin, Texas and New Mexico, 2010–2019" (Valder and others, 2021). All data points that met the filtering criteria as described in the Data Processing <procdesc> steps were retained in the data release. Further filtering of data points to remove unrealistic values was done prior to modeling. The model was used to estimate water use associated with continuous...
This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of gas resources in the Lewis Shale Total Petroleum System of New Mexico and Colorado. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...

This child page contains well information from the NMOCD and water volume information from the FracFocus dataset. The water volume assigned for hydraulic fracturing of NMOCD wells was obtained by averaging FracFocus wells by county and year and assigning those values to the NMOCD wells based on year the well was completed and county the well is located. All data points that met the filtering criteria as described in the Data Processing <procdesc> steps were retained in the data release. Further filtering of data points to remove unrealistic values was done prior to modeling. The data was utilized as input data for the model associated with the Scientific Investigations Report "Estimates of Water Use Associated with...
