The establishment of the South Central Climate Science Center (SCCSC) heralded new forms of partnership among Tribal nations and members of the climate science and conservation communities. But communicating key concepts such as risk and vulnerability is a culturally specific practice. So these new relationships call for pluricultural conversations about climate change and variability. To contribute to the goal of mutual understanding, this project developed and implemented a series of five workshops -- four in Oklahoma and one in New Mexico -- that introduced Tribal members and employees across the region to the SC CSC as a resource for their climate adaptation practices. Not counting members of the research team,...

These data are a part of the effort to map geologic substrates of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary region off Boston, Massachusetts. The overall goal is to develop high-resolution (1:25,000) interpretive maps, based on multibeam sonar data and seabed sampling, showing surficial geology and seabed sediment dynamics. The work was conducted in collaboration with the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, and the data collected will aid research on the ecology of fish and invertebrate species that inhabit the region. The Sanctuary's research vessel, R/V Auk, visited a total of 233 locations on Stellwagen Bank during six separate surveys from May 2016 to April 2019. During these surveys a customized...

On April 25, 2015, a large ( M7.8) earthquake shook much of central Nepal and was followed by a series of M>6 aftershocks, including a M7.3 event on May 12, 2015. This earthquake and aftershocks, referred to as the Gorkha earthquake sequence, caused thousands of fatalities, damaged and destroyed entire villages, and displaced millions of residents. The earthquakes also triggered thousands of landslides in the exceedingly steep topography of Nepal; these landslides were responsible for hundreds of fatalities, and blocked vital roads and trails to affected villages. With the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), and in collaboration...

This data release consists of a series of videos used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocity via particle image velocimetry (PIV). These data were acquired from the Tanana River near Nenana, Alaska, on July 24, 2019, along with field measurements of flow velocity used to assess the accuracy of image-derived velocity estimates. The videos were obtained using a Zenmuse X5 video camera deployed within a Meeker mount attached to the nose of a Robinson R44 helicopter. The data release includes a total of 14 individual videos obtained while the helicopter hovered at a series of different locations above the river channel to provide reach-scale coverage. Each of these videos was recorded at 30 frames...

This data release provides an example data set to accompany the manuscript titled "A Robot Operating System (ROS) package for mapping flow fields in rivers via Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)", submitted to the journal Software X. This ROS *.bag file contains remotely sensed data acquired during an Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) flight along a reach of the Sacramento River near Glenn, California, USA, on September 16, 2022. Cooperators on this project include the Intelligent Robotics Group from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Southwest Fisheries Science Center. The file bag6xs600.bag contains a single...
This data release includes videos acquired from a helicopter and field measurements of flow depth and velocity from the Tanana River near Nenana, Alaska, obtained on July 24, 2019. This parent data release includes links to child pages for two data sets produced during the study: 1. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) field measurements of flow depth and velocity from the Tanana River, Alaska, collected on July 24, 2019. 2. Videos of the Tanana River, Alaska, acquired from a helicopter on July 24, 2019. Please refer to the individual child pages for further detail about each data set. Overall, these data were used to assess the potential to estimate surface flow velocities and water depths in sediment-laden...
This dataset contains Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) footage from the 2018 summit collapse of Kīlauea Volcano, Island of Hawai‘i. The intrusion of magma into Kīlauea’s lower East Rift Zone triggered draining of the summit lava lake and magma withdrawal from the shallow reservoir. This resulted in 62 subsequent collapse events at the summit between May and early-August 2018. Each collapse event released energy equivalent to a magnitude-5.3 earthquake. The total collapse volume was about 0.8 km^3, with subsidence of more than 500 m in some places. There are 73 UAS videos in this publication, recorded from May 19 to September 5, which have been separated into subpages by month. Sub-pages for each month also contain...
This data release includes a video acquired from a satellite and field measurements of flow velocity from the Tanana River in Alaska that were used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocities via particle image velocimetry (PIV). The field data were collected on July 24, 2019, in cooperation with the USGS Alaska Science Center, and the satellite video was obtained on July 14, 2020. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of inferring flow velocities from video acquired from a satellite in orbit above the river by tracking water surface features via a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) algorithm. Remote sensing of flow velocity could provide a more efficient, cost-effective alternative...
