This dataset represents a species known range extent for American Bison (Bison bison) within the conterminous United States (CONUS) based on 2001 ground conditions. This range map was created by attributing sub-watershed polygons with information of a species' presence, origin, seasonal and reproductive use. See Gap Analysis Project Species Range Maps for more information regarding data creation and user constraints. For species specific range information, see the attached Range data.
This dataset represents a species habitat distribution map for American Bison (Bison bison) within the conterminous United States (CONUS) based on 2001 ground conditions. This habitat map was created by applying a deductive habitat model to remotely-sensed data layers within the species' known range. See Gap Analysis Project Species Habitat Maps for more information regarding model process and user constraints. For species specific model information, see the attached Species Habitat Model Report.

Typical coarse grained Pikes Peak granite on the summit of Bison Peak [Bison Mountain]. The rapid weathering of the granite along joints is shown in this view. This weathering gives rise to residual and balanced boulders characteristic of the areas where the Pikes Peak granite has been long exposed to mechanical and chemical weathering. Wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) that inhabit the boreal forests of Northern Canada were nearly eliminated during the late 1800s. Only bison populations in the area between the Great Slave Lake and the Peace-Athabasca Delta persisted. Historically, wood bison range included the Southwestern portion of the Northwest Territories. As part of a program to establish a minimum of three free-ranging populations of wood bison in their historical range, the Nahanni wood bison population in southwestern Northwest Territories was established in 1980. A 31000 BP bison limb bone from Nugget Gulch near Dawson City, Yukon, shows a "ring crack" considered to be a human-made impact mark resulting in exposure of marrow. This bone is approximately contemporaneous with wolf, horse, and Dall sheep specimens found on an ancient Mid-Wisconsinan terrain surface at this locality. Similar ring cracks, also interpreted as human-made, have been noted on late-glacial bison bones from Engigstciak, Yukon, and Lost Chicken Creek, Alaska.

This is an experimental collection of State species of interest from the New Mexico Heritage Society's "Biota Information System of New Mexico." There is interest from a NM Game and Fish Department contact in updating their connection with GAP species as well as discovering a new way to directly connect to live data on Species of Greatest Conservation Need. We are experimenting with a way to pick up all species and run them through the TIR process. The current BISON-M web application provides no smooth way that we could find to interface with software (including web scraping), so we ran a brute force query for all species in the database, copied the raw tabular text output to a text file, and then wrote a simple...
