Change detection algorithms were developed to map planform changes for the periods 1989-2000 and 2000-2010 in an automated manner. The geospatial processing included (1) reclassifying, intersecting, and dissolving of polygons, (2) evaluating specific transitions from one class to another, (3) evaluating adjacency among specific classes, and (4) measuring size of polygons. The methods not only detected changes, but also addressed various errors in the datasets (e.g., georeferencing errors). The methods described below are a broad overview of the methods. Additional details on methods are contained in a Python script (Rogala 2020) in ESRI’s ArcGIS that was used to execute the process on any pool.
