Summary

This is the landing page for all versions of the United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS). There are two versions as of 2022-11-04. Version 3.0 is anticipated on or before 2024-12-31. The US-RIIS is comprised of three lists, one each for Alaska (AK), Hawaii (HI), and the conterminous United States (L48). Each list includes taxonomic and ecological information about introduced (non-native), established (reproducing) taxa that: are, or may become, invasive (harmful) in the locality; that are not known to be harmful there; and/or that have been used for biological control in the locality. Purpose

This ScienceBase landing page provides access to current and past versions of the United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS), which are comprehensive and authoritative lists of non-native taxa established in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Conterminous United States. The purpose of the US-RIIS is to inform policy makers, land managers, the scientific community, and the public about which introduced (non-native) taxa are currently established (with reproducing populations) in Alaska, Hawaii, and/or the conterminous United States. Before becoming an invasive species that causes harm, a taxon must be both introduced and established. This species register catalogs introduced established species and provides a basis for prioritizing and managing invasive species in the United States. We anticipate the US-RIIS will be used to 1) generate species lists for horizon scanning, 2) create introduced species lists for smaller areas within the U.S., and 3) tag species occurrence data records with an introduced status where the species may not have been initially reported as introduced. The US-RIIS also contributes to the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (https://griis.org), and is a species checklist dataset to be periodically updated with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (https://gbif.org).

All versions of the United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS) are based on a prior dataset that began to be complied in 2012, A comprehensive list of non-native species established in three major regions of the United States, which has 3 superseded versions, all of which are accessible on ScienceBase at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9E5K160. Over the years the content of the US-RIIS has been expanded to more closely comply with the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species initiative (https://www.griis.org) and to be compatible with Darwin Core's biodiversity data standards (https://dwc.tdwg.org/) in order to be shared as three subregional species checklist and occurrence datasets with the Global Biodiversity Information Faciity (https://www.gbif.org).
