Summary

Introduced (non-native) species that become established may eventually become invasive, so tracking all introduced species provides a baseline for effective modeling of species trends and interactions, geospatially and temporally. The United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS) (ver. 2.0, November 2022, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9KFFTOD), as of 2022-10-23, is comprised of three lists, for the localities of Alaska (AK, with 545 records), Hawaii (HI, with 5,628 records), and the conterminous (or lower 48) United States (L48, with 8,527 records). Each includes introduced (non-native), established (reproducing) taxa that: are, or may become, invasive (harmful) in the locality; are not known to be harmful there; [...]

Purpose

The purpose of the US-RIIS is to inform policy makers, land managers, the scientific community, and the public about which introduced (non-native) taxa are currently established (with reproducing populations) in Alaska, Hawaii, and/or the conterminous United States. Before becoming an invasive species that causes harm, a taxon must be both introduced and established. This species register catalogs introduced established species and provides a basis for prioritizing and managing invasive species in the United States. We anticipate the US-RIIS and its associated documents will be used to 1) generate species lists for horizon scanning, 2) create introduced species lists for smaller areas within the U.S., and 3) tag species occurrence data records with an introduced status where the species may not have been initially reported as introduced. The US-RIIS also contributes to the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (https://griis.org), and generates three species checklist datasets (Alaska, Hawaii, conterminous United States) to be periodically updated within the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (https://gbif.org).

This USGS data release is ver. 2.0, 2022, of the database United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (US-RIIS). All versions of the US-RIIS database are available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P92DN8D8. This version supersedes version 1.0 of the US-RIIS. The US-RIIS is derived from, and also supersedes, the USGS data release: "A comprehensive list of non-native species established in three major regions of the United States: Version 3.0" (https://doi.org/10.5066/P9E5K160). All three of the superseded/deprecated versions of this previous product are accessible here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9E5K160.
