Summary

Pollen was measured in ambient air by several methods and in wet atmospheric deposition samples at three monitoring sites in the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) National Trends Network. A method for counting pollen on filters was developed and provided pollen counts for NADP atmospheric wet-deposition samples and high-volume ambient air samplers (HVAS) for comparison with co-located traditional microscopy and PollenSense sensor counting methods during the 2021 pollen season. Air and precipitation samples were collected by the NADP and analyzed by the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, in Madison, Wisconsin and Aerobiology Research Laboratories (Canada). Daily data were obtained from online summaries released by the [...]

Purpose

This data set contributes information to address a national need for coordinated pollen monitoring as stated by the Consortium of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), and endorsed by the Center for Diseases Control (CDC), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Improved ambient air and atmospheric deposition sampling methods specifically targeted for pollen capture and analysis are needed to accurately and efficiently obtain meaningful aeroallergen data from existing atmospheric monitoring networks. These data were used in a methods comparison conducted by the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) to assess how the NADP monitoring networks could be used to expand pollen monitoring in the USA and provide needed infrastructure for a National Pollen Monitoring Network to inform climate science and public health.

Provenance

Data were obtained from the PollenSense network at: https://www.pollensense.com/pages/data-api. Data were obtained from the National Allergy Bureau at: Madison, WI -- https://pollen.aaaai.org/#/station/d816b04e-aca1-4181-b965-393b60a10ca1/calendar/2022/5 and Draper, UT -- https://pollen.aaaai.org/#/station/575c20d1-846d-4ae3-bdb1-8aed42847a4a/calendar/2022/5. All other sample data were originally collected by the NADP, and samples were analyzed by the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, Madison, Wisconsin, and Aerobiology Research Laboratory, Nepean, Ontario, Canada. Data were compiled by WSLH personnel and sent to USGS in spreadsheets. National Atmospheric Deposition Program precipitation depth data were obtained by request from the NADP Data Manager to obtain 15-minute records. Daily NADP precipitation data are available at:https://nadp.slh.wisc.edu/precipitation/ , and precipitation chemistry data are available at: https://nadp.slh.wisc.edu/ntn-site-list/ .
