Summary

Electron microprobe analyses of sphalerite (ZnS) were collected on samples from current or past mining operations in the USA with a specific focus on germanium (Ge), a byproduct critical mineral recovered from sphalerite. Data and methods reported are part of a research study published in the 'Related External Resources' section below.

Purpose

Data were collected to determine the concentrations of minor and trace elements in sphalerite from mining areas in the USA where Ge is or has been recovered as a byproduct. Ultimately these data are a part of a broader initiative to provide insight into the enrichment of Ge in mineral deposits, the environmental behavior of Ge, and its potential for recovery from ores and mine wastes.
