Minear, J.T., and Wright, S.A., 2016, Water-surface elevations, depths, velocities, and temperature data collected for the NASA/JPL AirSWOT campaign on the Sacramento River, near Colusa, CA, for the period March – May, 2015: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/F7NZ85R4.

Summary

This dataset is one part of a larger field dataset collected during March - May 2015 along the Sacramento River, near Colusa, CA. This particular dataset contains longitudinal profiles of water-surface elevations collected in March 2015 using high-precision GPS measurements from a fast-moving power boat. The GPS measurements were corrected to account for the offset from the planing power boat to the water-surface elevation.

Purpose

This data set is one part of a large field dataset collected for calibration and validation purposes of the NASA / JPL AirSWOT campaign along the Sacamento River, near Colusa, CA, in March - May 2015. The AirSWOT campaign is an airborne precusor to the satellite-based NASA SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) Mission, which when launched, will attempt to measure surface water-related parameters from space. Additional appropriate uses of the data include investigating the effects of the major California drought on water stage and temperatures in the Sacramento River, as well as hydraulic modeling during very low water conditions.
