Index card: Small private dwelling at the Lakeside resort. This is a small house (see also color transparency no. 54 (wij00054_ct)) which had begun to slide toward the lake at the time this picture was taken. The trees on the left side of the photograph are partly submerged by water and the thoroughly soaked sediments had begun to slump toward the lake. By rapid work, the workmen were able to move the house to a safer and higher site. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: Southwestward view of Earthquake Lake. The light-gray band in the trees just above the lake consists of dead pine needles formed when the lake was kept at a higher level while a second spillway was being cut across the Madison Slide. Much of this area was flooded at the time the water was at its higher level. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Montana. August 1959.

The lake has been displaced to the right of northward. This view is westward, and the mountains are part of the south end of the Madison Range. Small fractures were formed as a aresult of slump. Index card: One of the large cracks in the concrete retaining wall of Hebgen Dam. The retaining wall, which is about 16 inches thick at the top and about 27 inches thick at the base, had a great many cracks in it of which 3 or 4 were as large as this one. The retaining wall slumped, tilted forward, and was fractured during the earthquake; water seeped through these fractures. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: The north end of Earthquake Lake. The trees to a level of about 50 feet above the present surface of Earthquake Lake were once inundated for about 30 days while the Corps of Engineers constructed a new spillway across the Madison slide. The water was then let down to its present level. During this time the trees below the water level died and the water mark is clearly visible as a dark gray line. Hebgen Lake earthquake. Montana. August 1959.

Index card: This picture was taken along the north valley wall of the Madison Canyon. View is northeastward from atop the debris of the Madison Slide and looks down toward a spillway being constructed at the time by the Corps of Engineers. The leading edge of slide shows as a white band near the upper part of the photograph. Behind is the main mass of the slide (covered by many fallen trees), now crisscrossed with roads as the dolomite boulders are hauled away to surface the spillway. Hebgen Lake earthquake, Madison County, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: Small crevices formed in the mud-flats along the south shore of Hebgen Lake. The entire shore was broken by many such cracks which apparently formed as water-soaked sediments slumped toward the deeper part of the lake--in this case, toward the right of the photograph.
