In many areas surveyed during the North American WBPHS, ground surveys are conducted in conjunction with the aerial surveys to derive annual visibility correction factors (VCFs) for the aerial survey crews, which are used during analyses to adjust for detection bias. Due to the remoteness of strata 1–12, ground surveys are not conducted there. Instead, a set of fixed VCFs by species and basic habitat type (strata 1–7 = boreal forest; strata 8–11 = tundra; stratum 12) are used. The fixed VCFs that were used through 1991 were derived from work done in WBPHS prairie strata. During the years 1985–1991, efforts were made by the FWS Division of Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region (MBM-Alaska) to develop more appropriate...

This geopackage contains the density strata that were used to create the YKD Coastal Zone Survey’s current four-year rotating panel design. This file was derived from a mid-1980’s ArcInfo coverage, ‘Sampling Intensity’ (“SI arc”) that was produced through the visual interpretation of 1:250,000-scale LANDSAT imagery and the nesting density of cackling Canada geese.

The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the raw data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the raw transcribed WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_RawObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer...

Starting in 1999, WBPHS_AK surveyors used the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired) to record bird data and capture the survey flight track. Each observer had their own computer and obtained their own separate flight track each day. The track was recorded by capturing a GPS location every 5 seconds as long as the survey software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the first transect, and was shut down at some time between the last transect and engine shut-down. The track thus includes the aircraft’s flight to and from transects as well as along the transects themselves. This collection comprises the track files from 1999 to...

This collection comprises the memoranda that have been produced annually since 2012 by MBM-Alaska for the Pacific Flyway to report abundance indices of lesser Canada geese, Taverner’s cackling geese, Western Population tundra swans, and trumpeter swans. The abundance indices of lesser Canada Geese and trumpeter swans were derived solely from WBPHS_AK data. Indices of Western Population tundra swans were derived from data collected during two MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey. Taverner’s cackling goose indices were derived from three MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey, and the Arctic Coastal Plain Survey. For further information on these...

In the 1960s, US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Alaska Region Migratory Bird Management (MBM-AK) developed a protocol for aerial Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) and Tundra Swan (C. columbianus) abundance surveys in Alaska that was used by several government agencies and private entities through 2015. This standardized survey protocol allowed data collected by these diverse organizations to be stored together in a common digital archival system called the Alaska Swan Database, which is maintained by MBM-AK. Contributions to the database ranged from relatively small, localized surveys to the statewide quinquennial Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey. Survey timing was either the spring nesting period or late summer...

These are the geospatial files used to construct the transects (the survey polygon) and the transect files themselves, created and exported using AeroScientific software. These files include:Survey area polygon (.xml file created from an ArcGIS mxd), survey transects (.xml and .fpl files), both created in AeroScientific’s FlightPlanner software as described in record 2.

Currently, the Aviatrix software produces data that is recorded and associated with each trigger point, but does not connect data from the camera (i.e., camera name) to these records. In order to calculate area for each photo that contains STEI, we would like to know the altitude of that photo. Therefore, we need to combine the Aviatrix data for each trigger point to the photo name that was taken at that trigger point. Spatial data collected by the GPS in the Aviatrix triggerbox along with camera and computer clock data is assembled to align spatial data (altitude and position data) with the imagery, mainly in order to assign the correct altitude to the images to calculate ground area within the photo frame. To do...

2010_TRUS_Optimal_Allocation.xls and 2015_TRUS_Optimal_Allocation.xlsx are Excel files that were created and used by MBM-AK to to determine the survey area stratification and sample selection for the 2010 and 2015 Alaska Trumpeter Swan Surveys. The 2010 and 2015 surveys were a stratified random-sample plot design with optimal allocation of sampling effort to minimize cost for a fixed variance. Note: The Excel files contain multiple worksheets, with each worksheet being a step in the process that progressed from the left-most worksheet towards the right.

This is an Rmarkdown file that maps the 2019 plot centers, creates plot polygons, and created the start and end coordinates of the distance sampling transects. Transect end points are written to a csv file for input in field GPS unit to guide field staff during surveys. Running this code will produce the file ‘transects.csv’.

This GeoPackage contains the analysis strata (“YKD_AnalysisStrata”) used in calculating population indices for ducks, loons, mergansers, grebes, gulls, and terns. This layer was created from the file (“YKD_DesignStrata”) when the existing rotating panel design was developed in 1999. This layer was originally created as an ArcInfo coverage, saved to a shapefile, and imported to SQLite Database format.
