Connectivity describes how well a landscape facilitates or impedes the movement of animals. Maximizing connectivity is a common management goal, especially for large mammals like moose (Alces americanus americanus) that occupy large home ranges and have the capacity to move long distances. Moose in the northeastern US (encompassing the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) represent a management priority and are expected to decline due to the near-term impacts of climate change and landscape development that will alter the distribution of habitats across the region. Large-scale maps of moose connectivity are unavailable but would provide an important resource for...

Data includes seed germination experiments observations from seeds collected during the fall of 2018 and 2020 at Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, near Roswell, New Mexico. Seeds of Cirsium wrightii, Agalinis calycina, and Helianthus paradoxus were collected by manually clipping seed heads from plants across the wetland management units. Seeds were placed in brown paper bags and transported to the lab. In the lab, seeds from 2018 were immediately used for experiments by placing them in an incubator using petri dishes. Seeds collected in 2020 received cold stratification and salinity treatments. Following cold stratification, seeds were placed in the incubator and received salinity treatments. Seeds were monitored...

We used NLCD 2011, SSURGO, and SEGAP data to map the density of desired resources for open pine ecosystems and six focal species of birds and 2 reptiles within the historic range of longleaf pine east of the Mississippi River. Binary rasters were created of sites with desired characteristics such as land form, hydrology, land use and land cover, soils, potential habitat for focal species, and putative source populations of focal species. Each raster was smoothed using a kernel density estimator. Rasters were combined and scaled to map priority locations for the management of each focal species. Species’ rasters were combined and scaled to provide maps of overall priority for birds and for birds and reptiles. For...

The datasets stored in this folder summarize health data for Brown Pelican nestlings and breeding adults from 2013-2016 in the Northern Gulf of Mexico at 9 breeding colonies from Texas to the Florida Panhandle. Data include values of blood analyte, and concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in blood and feather samples.

Herbicide treatments were applied to Zerene silverspot (Speyeria = Argynnis zerene zerene) post-diapause larvae and early blue violets (Viola adunca), the larval host plant of the Zerene silverspot butterfly, in two greenhouse experiments in 2018-2019. Treatments included distilled water for untreated (U), Agri-Dex (A), Nu Film IR (N), clopyralid (C), clopyralid with Agri-Dex (CA), clopyralid with Nu Film IR (CN), fluazifop-p-butyl (F), fluazifop-p-butyl with Agri-Dex (FA), and fluazifop-p-butyl with Nu Film IR (FN). Zerene silverspot responses measured in the 2018 experiment included larval and pupal survival, sex ratio, larval and pupal development time, pupal and adult mass, adult morphology, female fecundity,...

Fish colonization ability may be one factor affecting population resilience after disturbance. We conducted displacement experiments in headwater streams in Wyoming, U.S.A. to evaluate mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdii) and mountain sucker (Catostomus platyrhynchus) colonization ability. Specifically, we (1) determined if fish could colonize sites rapidly after displacement, (2) evaluated site-level factors affecting colonization, and (3) compared species-level differences in movement and colonization capabilities. For the colonization experiment, we removed fish from 31 experimental 100 m reaches to create an experimental displacement and examined short-term colonization dynamics in relation to initial fish abundance...

Annual colony counts of American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at Gunnison Island, Utah, USA, and selected environmental covariates hypothesized to influence colony population dynamics at this location. Environmental covariates include mean springtime Great Salt Lake water levels, minimum springtime air temperature, mean annual Pacific Decadal Oscillation index values, and mean annual Southern Oscillation Index values across the study period.

This dataset contains single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) information for aquatic insect species collected in tributaries of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon (Arizona, USA), as well as SNP information for individuals collected from reference reaches of the Upper Colorado River Basin in Utah. This dataset focuses specifically on three species that were common and widely distributed throughout tributary streams in Grand Canyon: a mayfly (Fallceon quilleri), a caddisfly (Hydrospyche oslari), and a water strider (Rhagovelia distincta).

Brook Stickleback Culaea inconstans is an aquatic invasive species in Wyoming that may pose a risk to native biodiversity. Our aim was to evaluate the current risk Brook Stickleback poses to native fish species in the North Platte River drainage. We updated the current distribution of Brook Stickleback, evaluated for possible range expansion, and determined landscape-level habitat drivers and occupancy potential for streams across the North Platte River drainage. Data included in this release was used to 1: run a random forest classification model to determine Brook Stickleback habitat associations in lotic environments at the landscape scale, 2. to determine habitat suitability across the study area based on predicted...

Small, surface-release dams are ubiquitous across the U.S. and have the potential to alter stream flow, impede sediment and nutrient transport, and fragment biotic assemblages. To mitigate these and other ecological impacts and reduce public safety hazards, dam removal has become an increasingly prevalent method of stream restoration. However, few streams have been consistently monitored before and after dam removal, and there is a need for more information regarding how dam removals affect stream ecosystems across different dam, stream, and watershed characteristics. The presented data aimed to quantify the effects of dams and dam removals on two critical water quality parameters (stream temperature and dissolved...

Trophic studies can provide valuable information on the risk an invader poses to native species. Brook Stickleback Culaea inconstans is an invasive fish species in Wyoming whose effect on native fish assemblages is poorly understood. Our goal was to understand the potential for competitive interactions between Brook Stickleback and native fishes. We used stable isotopes of carbon (ẟ13C) and nitrogen (ẟ15N) to evaluate the feeding ecology of Brook Stickleback relative to four native fishes. The data are appropriate for exploring whether native fish isotopic niches changed in sympatry with Brook Stickleback and to evaluate niche overlap between native fishes and Brook Stickleback. The data are associated with the...

Datasets collected from monitored zebra anthrax carcass sites in Etosha National Park, Namibia, 2010-2021. One data file describes the anthrax mortality, soil characterization of the carcass sites and details on the types and timing of different sampling efforts at these sites. The other data file is counts of Bacillus anthracis spores in surface soils collected annually at these carcass sites.

This is the data archive for the publication Ungulate Migrations of the Western United States, Volume 3 (Kauffman et al. 2022) and includes the collection of GIS map files that are mapped and described in the report. These map files are meant to provide a common spatial representation of the mapped migrations. This data release provides the means for ungulate migrations to be mapped and planned for across a wide variety of landscapes where they occur. Due to data sharing constraints of participating agencies, not all the files that underlie the mapped migrations included in the report have been released. Data can be viewed at: https://westernmigrations.net. Data in this archive can be downloaded two ways. To download...
