This dataset includes stable carbon isotope values, lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose concentrations (expressed as percent of ash-free dry mass) for riparian cottonwood (Populus deltoides) tree rings growing on the Little Missouri River floodplain, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Drought stress induces stomatal closure and the carbon isotope ratio of annual tree rings tends to be negatively correlated with water availability, especially in dry environments. However, lignin and hemicellulose can obscure annual trends in carbon isotope compositions as these wood components can differ in δ13C relative to pure cellulose. Previous studies indicate that planting perennial grasses (e.g., switchgrass) in high topographic relief cropland waterway buffers can improve local environmental conditions and sustainability. The upper portion of the Troublesome Aquifer is the sole source of water for domestic use in the Greater Pole Creek Basin, situated in the western portion of the upper Fraser River Valley in Grand County, Colorado. Data from drilling records for wells installed near and within recent home developments, municipal water-suppliers, water-quality records, and published reports are summarized as an initial synthesis of aquifer water quantity and quality. In spite of persistent drought and increased domestic aquifer-water usage, aquifer water storage remains robust with water levels little changed during the past 25 years. Using data from 288 adult and yearling female elk that were captured on 22 winter supplemental elk feedgrounds in Wyoming and monitored with GPS collars from 2007 - 2015, we fit Step Selection Functions (SSFs) during the spring abortion season and then implemented a master equation approach to translate SSFs into predictions of daily elk distribution for five plausible winter weather scenarios (from a heavy snow, to an extreme winter drought year). We predicted elk abortion events by combining elk distributions with empirical estimates of daily abortion rates, spatially varying elk seroprevalence, and elk population counts. This dataset contains information from capture-mark-recapture sampling of Oregon spotted frogs (Rana pretiosa) conducted 2016-2019 by USGS as part of a study relating R. pretiosa survival and abundance to wetland inundation in the upper Deschutes River. Data consist of site, survey, habitat, and species detection covariates, as well as 10 years of hydrological and drought metrics used to establish relationships between river flow and area of inundation at survey sites. Remotely sensed and model predicted area wet estimates for the sites are also given.

This data series provides tabular output from a series of modeling simulations for the State of California. The methods and results of this research are described in detail in Sleeter et al. (2019). We used the LUCAS model to project changes in ecosystem carbon balance resulting from land use and land use change, climate change, and ecosystem disturbances such as wildfire and drought. The model was run at a 1-km spatial resolution on an annual timestep. We simulated 32 unique scenarios, consisting of 4 land-use scenarios and 2 radiative forcing scenarios as simulated by 4 global climate models. From 2011-2018 USGS biologists recorded vegetation and biological soil crust (BSC) cover by species and tracked survival of tagged individual plants (388 in total) across 40 locations where paired experimental plots had been installed in 2010. Plant cover was visually estimated using four 75 x 100 cm survey frames. Each site contained a two plots measuring 1.5 by 2.0 meteres: a control plot and a plot covered by a shelter that excluded 35% of incoming precipitation. Sea-level rise and other climate change-induced disturbances threaten coastal wetland sustainability and carbon storage capacity. It is critical that we understand the mechanisms controlling wetland carbon loss so that we can predict and manage these resources in anticipation of climate change.

Management and disturbances have significant effects on grassland forage production. When using satellite remote sensing to monitor climate impacts such as drought stress on annual forage production, minimizing these effects provides a clearer climate signal in the productivity data. The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate three-dimensional hydrodynamics and waves to study salinity intrusion in the Delaware Bay estuary for 2016, 2018, 2021. These data represent simulated soil temperature and moisture conditions for current climate, and for future climate represented by all available climate models at two time periods during the 21st century. These data were used to: 1) quantify the direction and magnitude of expected changes in several measures of soil temperature and soil moisture, including the key variables used to distinguish the regimes used in the R and R categories; 2) assess how these changes will impact the geographic distribution of soil temperature and moisture regimes; and 3) explore the implications for using R and R categories for estimating future ecosystem resilience and resistance.

The Upper Missouri River headwaters (UMH) basin (36 400 km2 ) depends on its river corridors to support irrigated agriculture and world-class trout fisheries. We evaluated trends (1984–2016) in riparian wetness, an indicator of the riparian condition, in peak irrigation months (June, July and August) for 158 km2 of riparian area across the basin using the Landsat normalized difference wetness index (NDWI). We found that 8 of the 19 riparian reaches across the basin showed a significant drying trend over this period, including all three basin outlet reaches along the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin rivers. This dataset describes tree growth and site characteristics for 26 monitoring plots in 3 sites in Redwood National Park in California, USA. One site (A972) was established and sampled in 2007, 2008, and 2013 (Dagley and others, 2023). Two sites (Holter Ridge and Whiskey 40) were established and sampled in 2009 (van Mantgem and Das, 2014). Six existing plots in the Holter Ridge and Whiskey 40 sites were resampled for this study in summer of 2014 and winter of 2015. Tree growth data represent basal area increments at core height.
