These BioLake raster data provide global estimates (~10.0 x 12.4 km resolution) of twelve bioclimatic variables based on estimated lake temperature. Eleven of these twelve variables (BioLake01 - BioLake11) are estimated for each of three lake strata: lake mix (surface) layer, lake bottom, and total lake water column. These eleven variables correspond to CHELSA (Climatologies at high resolution for the earth's land surface areas) bioclimatic variables BIO1 - BIO11, except that these BioLake variables are based on lake water temperature and CHELSA BIO1 - BIO11 variables are based on air temperature. CHELSA BIO is also calculated a finer spatial resolution (~1 x 1 km). The twelfth variable (BioLake20; months with non-zero...
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is under consideration as a chemical fish deterrent at pinch points in rivers (e.g., inside locks) to reduce unwanted fish passage. This study evaluated the behavioral responses of invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) to dissolved CO2 in laboratory tanks. The goal of this project was to quantify CO2 concentrations that modify round goby behavior. More specifically, avoidance behavior (voluntary response) and loss of equilibrium (involuntary response) were quantified across 5, 15, and 25°C water temperatures. These data can be used to inform future field testing of CO2 as an invasive fish deterrent. Spreadsheets include data that were used to evaluate the efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2)...
This dataset includes quantifications of bigheaded carp DNA found in water samples collected from the Wabash River along transects at 3 sites over time. The samples were collected at 18 equidistant points in a transect across the river at each site. Samples were collected in 2013 on May 29, 30, 31, June 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, and 22. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was performed to determine the DNA concentrations in two replicates using the bigheaded carp assay defined in Merkes and others 2014.

Invasive species may vary in their seasonal distribution and abundance due to environmental conditions such as precipitation and temperature. Bigheaded carps, which include silver and bighead carp, are one such taxon of invasive species that appear to change habitats seasonally. Seasonal changes in bigheaded carp distribution may occur because of hydrological changes, water temperature changes, and spawning activities. Monitoring this seasonal dispersal and migration is important for management to control the population size and spread of the species. We examined if environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches could detect seasonal changes in the occurrence of DNA in water samples and used these approaches to calculate the...
Our model is a full-annual-cycle population model {hostetler2015full} that tracks groups of bat surviving through four seasons: breeding season/summer, fall migration, non-breeding/winter, and spring migration. Our state variables are groups of bats that use a specific maternity colony/breeding site and hibernaculum/non-breeding site. Bats are also accounted for by life stages (juveniles/first-year breeders versus adults) and seasonal habitats (breeding versus non-breeding) during each year, This leads to four states variable (here depicted in vector notation): the population of juveniles during the non-breeding season, the population of adults during the non-breeding season, the population of juveniles during the...

Control technology for dreissenid mussels (Dreissena polymorpha and D. bugensis) currently relies heavily on chemical molluscicides that can be both costly and ecologically harmful. There is a need to develop more environmentally neutral control tools to manage dreissenid mussels, particularly in cooler water. Previously, carbon dioxide (CO2) showed selective toxicity for Zebra mussels, relative to unionids, when applied in cool water (12 °C). Carp-Carbon Dioxide (carbon dioxide, CO2) is registered as a pesticide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for deterrence of Asian carp and to control aquatic nuisance species when applied under ice (USEPA 2019). The current registration would allow the use of...

The dataset accompanies the scientific article, "Reconstructing missing data by comparing interpolation techniques: applications for long-term water quality data." Missingness is typical in large datasets, but intercomparisons of interpolation methods can alleviate data gaps and common problems associated with missing data. We compared seven popular interpolation methods for predicting missing values in a long-term water quality data set from the upper Mississippi River, USA.

USGS scientists often face computationally intensive tasks that require high-throughput computing capabilities. Several USGS facilities use HTCondor to run their computational pools but are not necessarily connected to the larger USGS pool. This project demonstrated how to connect HTCondor pools by flocking, or coordinating, within the USGS. In addition to flocking the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center and the Wisconsin Water Science Center, we have flocked with the USGS Advanced Research Computing Yeti supercomputing cluster and other water science centers. We also developed tutorials on how to sandbox code using Docker within the USGS environment for use with high-throughput computing. A main accomplishment...

This code supports the manuscript "Sampling designs for landscape-level eDNA monitoring programs using three-level occurrence models. Specifically, we used this code to examine different sampling methods for eDNA-based studies as well as the ability of a three-level occupancy model to recover parameters. Our code can be used to conduct power analysis of eDNA-based studies or analyzed eDNA-based models with a three-level occupancy model. (Both of these uses would require some adaption by the user and require the user understand the statistical assumptions of occupancy models, experimental design, the [R](https://www.r-project.org/) and [Stan](http://mc-stan.org/) languages, and eDNA-based studies).

The objective of this study was to document the vertical avoidance behavior of the tadpole madtom, as a surrogate to the northern madtom, in response to granular Bayluscide® when applied to control or assess larval sea lamprey populations. The data set consists of one hour recordings of the avoidance behavior of tadpole madtoms after exposure to granular Bayluscide. Each trial (replicated 15 times) consisted of three treated (Bayluscide granules) and three control (washed sand only) clear Plexiglas vertical columns (107 cm in height, 30.5 cm in diameter) with a single madtom per column. Video recordings were analyzed for vertical avoidance at 30 second intervals after addition of Bayluscide granules/washed sand...
This data contains environmental DNA (eDNA) sample assay results that were collected from water samples taken from a tank housing Asian carp and placed either on ice or at room temperature. At both treatment temperatures, water samples were left untreated or were treated with an ethanol and sodium acetate solution (EtOH-NaAc). This was done to evaluate an ethanol and sodium acetate solution to maintain the integrity of the DNA samples for the time between collection and lab testing. Every day for 6 days following collection, a subset of the samples was removed from each treatment and DNA was extracted and nuclear and mitochondrial markers were assayed with qPCR. Results showed comparable persistence of DNA between...

This dataset includes laboratory data collected to determine the effects of hydrogen peroxide on nitrification processes in biofilters of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Data from the laboratory studies were used to inform methods used to conduct field trials in pilot- and commercial-scale RAS. Biofilter nitrification was monitored by measuring the levels of total ammonia-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, and nitrate-nitrogen in experimental aquaria containing a small biofilter before and after hydrogen peroxide was applied to the test system. There are 4 excel workbooks associated with this data set: RASHP Range finding Trial.csv, RASHP Definitive Trial.csv, Hydrogen Peroxide Lab Studies.csv, and DO after HP...
