Characterizing genetic structure across a species’ range is relevant for management and conservation as it can be used to define population boundaries and quantify connectivity. Here, we characterized population structure and estimated effective migration in Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Our objectives were to (1) describe large-scale patterns of population genetic structure and gene flow and (2) to characterize genetic subpopulation centers across the range of Greater Sage-grouse. Samples from 2,134 individuals were genotyped at 15 microsatellite loci. Using standard STRUCTURE and spatial principal components analyses, we found evidence for four or six areas of large-scale genetic differentiation...

Ken Pierce was a Research Geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey for over 55 years and authored numerous scientific papers, geologic maps, and field trip guides. This data release contains digital scans of 64 field notebooks 713 annotated aerial photographs, and 640 annotated geologic and topographic maps authored or annotated by Ken Pierce or his collaborators. Information contained in these notebooks, aerial photographs, and maps provide much of the underpinning of Ken Pierce's research, which focused largely on the glacial and geomorphological history of Yellowstone National Park and surrounding areas.

Genetic networks can characterize complex genetic relationships among groups of individuals, which can be used to rank nodes most important to the overall connectivity of the system. Ranking allows scarce resources to be guided towards nodes integral to connectivity. The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) is a species of conservation concern that breeds on spatially discrete leks that must remain connected by genetic exchange for population persistence. We genotyped 5,950 individuals, from 1,200 greater sage-grouse leks distributed across the entire species’ geographic range. We found a small world network composed of 458 nodes connected by 14,481 edges that are described here. The files associated...

This data set is comprised of one table with sampling information and NCBI BioProject accession numbers for sequence information of this amplicon-based study targeting Labyrinthula, Phytophthora, and Halophytophthora of known pathogenic and non-pathogenic [to eelgrass (Zostera marina)] strains from eDNA samples. eDNA samples included water, sediment, and eelgrass from Notsuke Wan (Cove) Japan, Safety Sound, Izembek Lagoon, Port Moller, Chignik Lagoon, and Frederick Sound, Alaska and cloacal swabs from waterfowl hunted near Cold Bay Alaska. Replicate samples and multiple sampling dates of the same location were included. Highly conserved primers which could differentiate species of interest were developed for four...

Starting in 2003, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center in West Glacier, MT, in collaboration with the National Park Service, collected avalanche observations along the Going to the Sun Road during the spring road-clearing operations. The spring road-clearing along Going to the Sun Road utilized a team of avalanche specialists from the USGS and Glacier National Park to communicate the potential avalanche hazard to crews working to clear the road of snow in preparation for summer visitation. The operations typically begin around April 1st and continue through mid-June each year. The dataset includes all of the specific details collected for each avalanche occurrence and conforms...

This dataset provides computed remotely-sensed streamflows (RSQ) at river reaches of selected rivers in Alaska. We used the relation between water-surface elevation data derived from satellite altimetry and dynamic surface water extent data derived from LANDSAT and Sentinel imagery data with the Modified Optimized Manning Method Algorithm (MOMMA) to compute remotely sensed streamflows. Data are organized in ZIP packages named for each river reach. Reach-specific details are provided in a README file included in each river reach ZIP package. Depending on the input data available for specific reaches, we used different workflows to estimate river reach width and process the data from river reaches. Each workflow...

Functional connectivity, quantified using landscape genetics, can inform conservation through the identification of factors linking genetic structure to landscape mechanisms. We used breeding habitat metrics, landscape attributes, and indices of grouse abundance, to compare fit between structural connectivity and genetic differentiation within five long-established Sage-Grouse Management Zones (MZ) I–V using microsatellite genotypes from 6,009 greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) collected across their range. We estimated structural connectivity using a circuit theory-based approach where we built resistance surfaces using thresholds dividing the landscape into “habitat” and “nonhabitat” and nodes were...

Sleeper populations are established populations of introduced species whose population growth is limited by one or more abiotic or biotic conditions. Sleeper populations pose an invasion risk if a change in those limiting conditions, such as climate change, enables population growth and invasion. With thousands of established species, it is critical that we identify and prioritize potential sleepers. Here, we identified non-native plants established in the northeastern United States with high impacts and the potential to expand with climate change. We focused on 118 taxa regulated by one or more state outside the Northeast plus 61 taxa recorded as invasive globally and under consideration for regulation in the Northeast....

Note: this data release has been superseded by version 3.0, available here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P1385SV2 Data were collected as part of a long-term capture-recapture program to assess the status and dynamics of populations of two long-lived, federally endangered catostomids in Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon and Clear Lake Reservoir, California. Lost River suckers (LRS; Deltistes luxatus) and shortnose suckers (SNS; Chasmistes brevirostris) have been captured and tagged with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags during their spawning migrations in each year since 1995.PIT tagged species were encountered in netting efforts, remote transceivers, and active scanning on bird colonies across the Upper Klamath River...
