The WBPHS is conducted by flying an aircraft along a set of segment lines. (One or more contiguous segments comprise a transect.) The geographic coordinates in WBPHS_Segment_Endpoints.csv represent the beginning and ending points of the segment lines in Alaska and Old Crow Flats (Yukon Territory) strata 1-12. The point coordinates in this file have been incorporated into various products (e.g., a GPS waypoints file) to aid in survey-flight navigation. The coordinates are in decimal degrees, WGS84 datum. The set of segments contained in this file was established in 1964. In the years 1957-1963, the survey design included many, but not all, of these segments. Additional segments were flown in some or all years during...

In many areas surveyed during the North American WBPHS, ground surveys are conducted in conjunction with the aerial surveys to derive annual visibility correction factors (VCFs) for the aerial survey crews, which are used during analyses to adjust for detection bias. Due to the remoteness of strata 1–12, ground surveys are not conducted there. Instead, a set of fixed VCFs by species and basic habitat type (strata 1–7 = boreal forest; strata 8–11 = tundra; stratum 12) are used. The fixed VCFs that were used through 1991 were derived from work done in WBPHS prairie strata. During the years 1985–1991, efforts were made by the FWS Division of Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region (MBM-Alaska) to develop more appropriate...

The Waterfowl Breeding Population & Habitat Survey (WBPHS) has been conducted annually since 1955 (1957 in Alaska) by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Canadian Wildlife Service to estimate the spring abundance of targeted waterfowl species in their principal breeding areas of North America. The survey results are used to establish annual hunting regulations in the United States and Canada, monitor population trends, and inform various conservation and management decisions at the state, flyway, and continental levels. The Waterfowl Program in the FWS Division of Migratory Bird Management-Alaska Region (MBM-Alaska) is responsible for surveying strata 1–12 of the WBPHS during May to June of each year (i.e.,...

EstimatesTableWBPHS_20220125.csv is a table of bird abundance estimates by year and species, 1957-2021. It was produced by MBM-AK using AKaerial R code and the WBPHS_AK QC transcribed dataset. The date in the file name (format = YYYYMODA, where YYYY = year, MO = month, and DA = day) represents the date that the R code was run to produce the table. A data dictionary and details on analysis methods are provided from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial.

This project is an annual communicating memo explicitly designed to inform the Pacific Flyway Representative of waterfowl survey results for incorporation of the data into harvest management reports and regulatory processes. This memorandum is additionally shared widely with partners outside the USFWS. The major products are an annual reporting memo–automatically generated from an R Quarto document, and 19 species-specific comma delimited table files that appear in the memo, and the generating R (.rmd) code.

This collection comprises the log files that accompany the quality-controlled (QC) WBPHS-AK transcribed bird-observation data files. The log files were produced when the original (“raw”) transcribed data were run through the QC process via the “Greenlight” script within the R package “AKaerial” (available at github.com/USFWS/AKaerial). The log files describe any changes that were made to the raw transcribed data during the QC process. There is one log file for each QC transcribed data file: WBPHS_YYYY_QCLog_OOO.html, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer initials.

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey design transects from 2007 to present. The original transects were created as shapefiles and imported to this SQLite database. Transects were saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.ACP_2007_Trans,” “main.ACP_2008_Trans,” “main.ACP_2009_Trans,” etc.). These aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. The inter-transect spacing in the low, medium, high, and very-high density strata varies so that areas with higher waterfowl density are surveyed more intensively. The current four-year rotating...

The WBPHS_AK bird observation data are archived as two separate datasets: 1) the raw data as originally transcribed by survey observers; and 2) the data as edited via a quality-control (QC) process. Among other things, the QC process removed records of certain non-waterfowl species, and it changed some species codes to meet the MBM-Alaska Waterfowl Program’s standardized format for transect waterfowl surveys. The QC dataset is that which MBM-Alaska uses for analyses and is considered the most appropriate for sharing with other users. This collection of files comprises the raw transcribed WBPHS_AK bird-observation data. There is one file for each year and observer: WBPHS_YYYY_RawObs_OOO.csv, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer...

Starting in 1999, WBPHS_AK surveyors used the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired) to record bird data and capture the survey flight track. Each observer had their own computer and obtained their own separate flight track each day. The track was recorded by capturing a GPS location every 5 seconds as long as the survey software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the first transect, and was shut down at some time between the last transect and engine shut-down. The track thus includes the aircraft’s flight to and from transects as well as along the transects themselves. This collection comprises the track files from 1999 to...

This collection comprises the memoranda that have been produced annually since 2012 by MBM-Alaska for the Pacific Flyway to report abundance indices of lesser Canada geese, Taverner’s cackling geese, Western Population tundra swans, and trumpeter swans. The abundance indices of lesser Canada Geese and trumpeter swans were derived solely from WBPHS_AK data. Indices of Western Population tundra swans were derived from data collected during two MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey. Taverner’s cackling goose indices were derived from three MBM-AK surveys: WBPHS_AK, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Coastal Zone Survey, and the Arctic Coastal Plain Survey. For further information on these...

The Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey (WBPHS) has been flown annually in Alaska since 1957. This survey follows a standard protocol as part of a North American continental survey program. The waterfowl habitats included in the WBPHS in Alaska were originally determined from fairly crude, small-scale aeronautical maps. Questions about how well the WBPHS represents waterfowl breeding populations in Alaska led to a multi-year effort to more precisely define the waterfowl breeding habitat and better measure the size of breeding waterfowl populations within it. Habitat areas were redefined and digitized from larger-scale (1:250,000) U.S. Geological Survey maps. This resulted in a 20% increase in the amount...
