This project identifies priority areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion to implement conservation strategies for riverine and riparian habitat. This is tailored towards the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) conservation goals and objectives, and provides the foundation for adaptation to a changing climate. This project adopts a “zoned” approach to identifying focal areas, connectivity management zones and zones for riparian habitat and ecological representation. Through a series of workshops and webinars, the ALI articulated its freshwater conservation goals and targets. Key aspects of these goals included: a focus on non-anadromous salmonid (salmon and steelhead) species, include riparian birds and waterfowl as key...

The zip file below contains raw input and output files for the 4 final version of the ALI Marxan model. The versions all have the same number of runs (100), number of iterations (35 million), SPF factor for each conservation feature,(100) and BLM (0.35). They vary in overall goal levels and whether or not facets were targeted. The four versions are: (1) high overall goal levels, facets not targeted;(2) medium overall goal levels, facets not targeted; (3) medium overall goal levels, facets not targeted; (4) medium overall goal levels, facets targeted at 15%. Please see the associated report (ALI 2013) for further details, and contact Madeline with any questions.

This report summarizes the results from a climate change adaptation workshop focused on the Columbia Plateau landscape in eastern Washington and parts of Idaho and Oregon. The objective of the workshop was to collaborate with landscape managers to apply results from the Pacific Northwest climate change vulnerability assessment (PNWCCVA) to on-the-ground ecological management objectives. Specifically, we sought to address the following questions: How can model results and datasets be applied to assist with management decisions? How can model results and datasets be made more useful for informing species and landscape management? To this end, we presented information and data developed as part of the PNWCCVA to workshop...

This is a set of scripts developed by Madeline Steele in 2013 as a part of the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) spatial prioritization analysis. They are provided here both as methodological documentation and because they may be useful for other projects. They are not set up to be imported into an ArcGIS toolbox, and all path names would have to be changed before they could be used. They are commented, and variables should be at the top, but they are probably not very useful without a bit of previous Python experience. Please feel free to use and/or splice and dice these scripts, and contact Madeline if you have any questions. The layers in this map service represent 4 different version of the final ALI Marxan model. Selection frequency layers show how often each hexagon was selected over 100 runs of a specific version. The "Best Solution" is not a perfect solution, but simply the best scoring solution out of 100 runs for each version.

The Pacific Region National Wildlife Refuge System developed a strategic approach to identify region-wide land/habitat conservation priorities. This approach was piloted in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion and resulted in a high-level landscape-scale conservation design. Working closely with conservation partners in the region, we developed a data management and analysis model that builds from existing data sets and can be shared easily with other partners.

This dataset contains the data described in Looney and Eigenbrode's 2012 Natural Areas journal article (Characteristics and Distribution of Palouse Prairie Remnants: Implications for Conservation Planning), including potential Palouse remnants, a boundary for the study area, and a set of potential remnants that lay outside of the study area. While the potential remnants inside the area were reviewed based on limited ground-truthing described in the article, those outside the area were not. As such, there are likely potential remnants that are in fact re-colonized field margins or drainage ditches, or CRP-like plantings. Since the focus was primarily on eyebrows located in agricultural contexts, many of the river...

In 2014 and 2015, the Arid Lands Initiative developed “Conservation Scorecards” for their Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). To create the scorecards, we collected numerous existing geospatial datasets that could help provide decision support for ALI land managers, then summarized them to the geometry of PCAs and PLAs (e.g., took the spatial mean of a Landscape Condition Model). To better understand the analysis, please read the report, “Assessing the Condition and Resilience of Collaborative Conservation Priority Areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion,” available here. The PCA scorecards pdfs are attached to the main report as an appendix, and the PLA scorecards are included in a short...

This dataset is an extract of the resistance surface created for the Pacific Northwest Duke Climate Resilience Project. It incorporates data on various human activities from the following data sources: National Landcover Dataset, Energy Infrastructure data from the Ventyx Corporation, National Wetlands Inventory, TIGER 2010 Road Data, active railroads and Dave Theobald's housing density dataset developed from 2010 census data. More details on the creation of this surface can be found in the document "Creation of Resistance Surfaces for the Resistant Kernel Pacific Northwest Duke Landscape Resilience Project".

This zipped folder includes a file geodatabase that contains the spatial data sets gathered for the second phase of the Arid Land Initiative’s Landscape Conservation Design activity in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion, as well as an excel file with information about the Ecological Integrity Assessment (EIA) data variables. This analysis, which was funded by the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative, is fully described in the 2015 ALI report also available on ScienceBase, here. The file geodatabase contains the Priority Conservation Areas identified using Marxan in the first phase of the analysis. For the second phase, numerous statistics summarizing representing current conservation value and vulnerability...

This project is part of a larger effort to design a sustainable landscape for wildlife and ecological systems in the Columbia Plateau ecoregion. Another goal of this effort is to test and describe different approaches to doing “Landscape Conservation Design” (LCD) and working towards articulating a toolkit of approaches for LCD. This report documents a task related to further develop and testing of this toolkit as applied to priority areas in the Columbia Plateau). This project focuses on a rapid assessment method of several potential areas across a large landscape. This assessment project builds from these previous ALI efforts (ALI 2013 and ALI 2014) by providing decision support for strategy development. This...

To support the ALI spatial priorities analysis, the LANDFIRE rasters in this geodatabase were downloaded from http://www.landfire.gov/datatool.php, and clipped to the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group's (WHCWG) Columbia Plateau (CP) study area, which is the CP ecoregion with a 25km buffer. They were also projected to the HabConnectProjectArea_North_America_Albers_Equal_Area_Conic projection, a custom projection developed by the WHCWG for their CP analysis and also used for the ALI Marxan analysis. The data were downloaded in March 2013. Since then, some (but not all) of these datasets have been updated. The included layers are: - biophysical settings - succession class - existing vegetation...

These documents, prepared by Sonia A. Hall and the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) Core Team, articulate the shared biological, strategic, and spatial priorities of the ALI in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion. Excerpt from the executive summary: —————————— Eastern Washington’s arid lands are a diverse and productive landscape, with an intricate mix of shrub steppe, grasslands, wheat fields, irrigated crops, orchards and vineyards, wetlands, streams and lakes, and rocky outcrops and cliffs. This landscape supports over 235 plant and wildlife species, while producing billions of dollars in crops and livestock annually. To conserve this landscape and the biological, social and economic values it supports major challenges...

These are the Python scripts used to create the scorecards for the Phase 2 report. They are primarily provided for reference, and require library installation and several local files to run properly. If anyone is interested in running a modeified version of these scripts for a similar purpose, please contact Madeline Steele (madeline_steele@fws.gov). One script makes map PNGs from an ArcMap mxd with styling that varies with scale, and the other pulls these maps and other information together to create the scorecard PDFs.
