Located in the northern tropical Pacific Ocean, Majuro is the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Majuro Atoll consists of a large, narrow landmass and a set of smaller perimeter islands surrounding a lagoon that is over 100 square miles in size. The waters surrounding the Majuro Atoll land areas are relatively shallow with poorly mapped bathymetry. However, the Pacific Ocean on the exterior of the coral atoll and the lagoon within its interior consist of deep bathymetry with steep slopes. The highest elevation of the Majuro Atoll is estimated at only 3-meters above sea level, which is the island community of Laura located on the western part of the atoll. At the eastern edge of the atoll lies the capital...

Streams delineated to model potential annual sediment transport and yield. Only areas with high flow accumulation values were included to model streams that are likely permanent.
This research provides insight on Native Hawaiian relationships to drought historically as well as current practices within community-based management. Of importance are historical records of drought spanning short term in one section of an island to three generations across multiple islands. This dataset represents a survey of the Ulukau, Papakilo Database, and Kuluwaimaka Collection from the Bishop Museum for drought related environmental changes and natural climate indicators, traditional responses to related disasters. First, a review of Hawaiian proverbs (‘ōlelo no‘eau) related to drought and elements impacted by drought (e.g., plants, food resource, death, famine) identify perspectives that reflect household...

To examine Palau residents’ reliance on reef fish, we reviewed published peer-reviewed literature, non-governmental organizations’ surveys, and unpublished data from a survey conducted by this project’s team. Volume of reef fish caught, consumed, and bartered at periurban, urban, and rural states was compared to the area of reefs within state waters to calculate fishing pressure. Data on fish residential consumption was triangulated and synthesized across data sources, including PIs Oleson and Lewis’ unpublished data from a resident survey conducted in 2018, an SPC dataset of fisher households conducted in 2018, and peer-reviewed literature.

These files contain two datasets. First are vertical fluxes of energy, water vapor and carbon dioxide calculated by the eddy covariance technique using measurements taken at Olaa tower (Flux Data). Second are results of historical and future runs of the Community Land Model (CLM) for the Thurston and Olaa tower sites (CLM Output Data). Output includes time series of energy, water vapor, and carbon dioxide exchanges at each site. The historical runs are forced by gap-filled measured time series at each site. Future data sets were contructed by shifting values in the historical run by increments selected for possible future scenarios. Increments were based on the results of statistical downscaling of future climate...

This product used species distribution modeling (SDM) to model the geographic distribution fire promoting grasses across the islands of Hawaii under both current climate conditions and under future climate change scenarios (RCP 8.5 at year 2100). The RCP 8.5 scenario assumes unmitigated and continued release of greenhouse grasses and continued human population growth. Six species of well established and widely distributed grasses (Andropogon virginicus (broomsedge), Cenchrus ciliaris (buffelgrass), Cenchrus setaceus (fountain grass), Megathyrus maximus (guinea grass, Urochloa maxima, Pancicum maximum), Melinis minutiflora (mollasses grass), and Schizachyrium microstachyum (formerly referred to as S. condensatum...

Measurements of fog, wind, fog interception, soil moisture, and fog effects on plant water use and plant survival were collected along with these vegetation data to test a model to estimate CWI as a function of fog-water movement and these vegetation characteristics.

Previous research identified species of invasive plants in Hawai'i which are highly flammable and act as fuels in wildfires across Hawai'i. This work aimed to map the distribution of these species (largely grasses) around the islands of Hawai'i with the goal of using the locations for species distribution modeling. All data represents presence data, no absence data were recorded. Data are largely from within the past 20 years, but some georeferenced herbarium specimens go as far back as 1905. Data were obtained from georeferenced herbarium specimens, vegetation plot data, citizen science data (iNaturalist) reviewed by the authors, and data from roadside surveys conducted as part of this research to map these species....

This dataset contains information regarding where management should prioritize conservation efforts in the Hawaiian Island of Maui given current conditions and projected future conditions due to climate change. This dataset is an aggregation of many different datasets looking at the ecological and socio-cultural information inland and around the coast of the island.
The outputs of two versions of the Single-Layer Wet Canopy Water Balance model. Parameters include cloud water interception, evaporation of rainwater or fog water from wet canopy (interception evaporation), and canopy water storage.

The following files contain source data for use of the Community Land Model 4.0 at two study sites in Volcanoes National Park, Hawai'i. Included are: Biometric data: 1) Growth increment data for Thurston and Olaa, based on dbh surveys done in four 10 m by 10 m plots at over a 12 year time period at Thurston and at six plots overs a 12 year period at Olaa, 2) Field measured leaf area index data. Measurements were made using LAI-2000 and LAI-2200 instruments, 3) Litterfall from Thurston and Olaa over a 17-mo period from June 2014 to Sep 2015. Data were sorted by species/litter type. Data are weights., 4) Field measured soil respiration data scaled to annual values and compared with tower-based measurements of ecosystem...

This raster indicates modeled habitat for various species under current and future conditions. Using the Price et al. (2012) parameters, we modeled species ranges as a function of elevation, temperature, and precipitation as described in Jacobi et al. (2016). Our methods departed slightly from their procedure in that we did not exclude non-pioneer-classified species from young lava flows. The spreadsheets associated with this metadata file represent: (Tab 1) Streamflow and drainage basin characteristics of selected gaged steams in Hawaii used to develop statistical models to estimate surface-water availability during low flow conditions and for varying rainfall conditions. For gaged streams on Maui, two sets of projected rainfall conditions for the late 21st century and associated estimates of changes in low flows and usable habitat for native stream fauna are also provided. (Tab 2) Drainage basin characteristics of ungaged streams on Maui used to apply the statistical models, two sets of projected rainfall conditions for the late 21st century, and associated estimates of changes in low flows and...
