In 2023, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in collaboration with the Cook County Bureau of Technology (BoT), conducted comprehensive hydrographic and water quality surveys, along with activity and disturbance assessments of 58 total waterbodies encompassing lakes, rivers, and canals within Cook County, Illinois. These surveys and assessments describe the bathymetry, water-quality conditions, and on-site field crew observations and impressions for each water body and its surrounding catchment area. Data collected may assist BoT with resource management decisions and practices, as well as contribute to an inventory that can be shared with other local governmental agencies. Included in this data release are bathymetric,...

Note: this data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P1R9WSDH. A motion-activated video camera documented the passage of commercial tows through the Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal at Romeoville, Illinois, over the period October 1, 2018, to July 3, 2019. Videos were manually screened and analyzed to extract tow characteristics including date and time of video recording, number and configuration of barges, loading of barges (loaded, unloaded, or mixed), direction of travel, and bow type (rake or box). Only commercial vessels were logged and no identifying data about the tow vessels were maintained. All videos triggered...

Water velocities were measured in the Des Plaines River from approximately river mile 286 to river mile 284 on October 19–21, 2015 using Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with differential GPS receivers with submeter accuracy. These velocity data were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS), and

In 2017, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers undertook a large-scale interagency field study to determine the influence of commercial barge vessels on the efficacy of the Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) in preventing fish passage. This study included a series of trials in which a tow, consisting of a tug vessel and fully-loaded barges, transited the EDBS in both upstream-bound (n = 65) and downstream-bound (n = 66) directions. Wall-mounted velocity probes were located at (41.6423629, -88.060329). The configuration of the barges for each run, and the time at which the bow and stern of the tow pass the wall-mounted...

These data were collected using a 1200 kHz TRDI Rio Grande acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) in mode 12 with 25 centimeter bins from a moving boat. The data were georeferenced with a Trimble AG132 differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver with submeter accuracy. The data have been depth-averaged over the entire measured portion of the water column, temporally averaged over 5-second intervals to reduce noise, and exported as a .csv file using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (Parsons and others, 2013). These data were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS), and were concurrent with a dye-tracing study. NOTE: Any data assigned...
The text file "Dewpoint temperature.txt" contains hourly data and associated data-source flag from January 1, 1948, to September 30, 2017. Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne National Laboratory, 2017) is the primary source of the data and is processed following the guidelines documented in Over and others (2010). Missing and apparently erroneous data values were replaced with adjusted values from nearby stations used as “backup”. Midwestern Regional Climate Center (Midwestern Regional Climate Center, 2017) station at Chicago O'Hare International Airport is used as "backup". Each hourly value is assigned a corresponding data source flag that indicates the source of the value and its transformations. Each flag is...

Two survey boats equipped with differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and Turner Designs C3 submersible fluorometers were used to survey the spatial distribution of the Rhodamine WT dye in the Des Plaines River downstream of the Brandon Road Lock and Dam (BRLD) near Rockdale, Ilinois. Mapping of the dye plume commenced after the lock chamber at BRLD was dyed with 4 liters of Rhodamine WT dye during a routine filling procedure. Measurements of dye concentration downstream collected by these survey boats capture the leakage of dyed water from the lock, the pulse of dyed water exiting the lock during routine emptying of the lock, and the mixing of the dyed water downstream during a 17-minute flushing...

These data were collected in support of a multi-agency effort to evaluate the feasibility of using carbon dioxide to create a barrier and prevent upstream passage of invasive fish through navigational locks. The auxiliary lock at Lock and Dam 14 on the Mississippi River near Pleasant Valley, Iowa, was chosen for a field-scale trial of the carbon dioxide barrier to be conducted in 2018. In preparation for this trial, the mixing in the lock chamber during routine operations and the fate and transport of lock water released to the pool downstream was studied using a dye tracer. In June 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) performed two injections of Rhodamine WT dye into the auxiliary lock chamber as the lock was...

These data are high-resolution bathymetry (riverbed elevation) in compressed LAS (*.laz) format, generated from the August 1–3, 2022, hydrographic survey of the Calumet River and Calumet Sag Channel in Cook County, Illinois. The survey extends from the junction with Lake Michigan in the northeast downstream to the junction with the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in the southwest. Hydrographic data were collected using a high-resolution multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS), which consists of a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and an inertial navigation system (INS) mounted on a marine survey vessel. Data were collected as the vessel traversed the channel along overlapping longitudinal survey lines distributed...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with DuPage County Stormwater Management Department, developed a watershed data management (WDM) database of hourly meteorological and hydrologic data for use in a near real-time streamflow simulation system. This WDM database is updated at least weekly by USGS staff with the latest available data. These data are initially provisional and may have periods of missing or flawed data due to equipment malfunctions or other problems. To improve the accuracy of simulations, the WDM database is updated and corrected with quality-assured and quality-controlled (QA/QC) data for each water year (a water year is the 12-month period, October 1 through September 30, in which...
