From 1995 to 1999, a subset of nest plots were searched twice by field crews to estimate nest detection probability by mark-recapture methods. Over the five years, 30 plots were searched twice and over 2700 unique nests were found. From these data, nest detection probability is estimated using a Huggins-type mark recapture model where individual-level covariate effects of nest and observer attributes were estimated. These estimates are then used to predict nest detection rates in other years based on covariates of nests and observers. Nest detection rates are then applied to annual plot search to estimate nest populations for each species in the sampled area.

R code that takes in the nest capture history data (chdata.csv), reformats it for model fitting in Program Mark via the R package RMark. A series of models of increasing complexity are fit and compared using AIC. Output is written to text files for each model but is generally not used or saved. Code can be run to generate model results and R workspaces/ object to inspect parameter estimates. The primary purpose of this code is to explore model structures for predicting detection and as an attempt to reproduce historically used parameter estimates in past nest plot reports (e.g., Fischer et al. 2017 and earlier). Results from ‘Model 7’ are most similar to detection estimates used in the past.

EstimatesTableWBPHS_20220125.csv is a table of bird abundance estimates by year and species, 1957-2021. It was produced by MBM-AK using AKaerial R code and the WBPHS_AK QC transcribed dataset. The date in the file name (format = YYYYMODA, where YYYY = year, MO = month, and DA = day) represents the date that the R code was run to produce the table. A data dictionary and details on analysis methods are provided from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial.

BIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION,
Dusky Canada geese (Branta canadensis occidentalis) comprise one of the smallest populations of geese in North America and their breeding range is limited to Prince William Sound, primarily the Copper River Delta, and Middleton Island, Alaska. The Alaska Region of Migratory Bird Management initiated an aerial breeding pair survey on the Copper River Delta in 1986 after reported declines in the abundance of dusky Canada geese on their nesting and wintering grounds. Since 2008, the Pacific Flyway Council uses results of the aerial breeding pair survey, together with Middleton Island ground counts conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, as a management index to determine optimal hunting regulations. Survey...

This project is an annual communicating memo explicitly designed to inform the Pacific Flyway Representative of waterfowl survey results for incorporation of the data into harvest management reports and regulatory processes. This memorandum is additionally shared widely with partners outside the USFWS. The major products are an annual reporting memo–automatically generated from an R Quarto document, and 19 species-specific comma delimited table files that appear in the memo, and the generating R (.rmd) code.

Data,
The daily flight tracks of the 1997-2002 aerial summer Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey were recorded to an onboard computer using the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired). The tracks were recorded by capturing the plane’s location from a GPS every five seconds as long as the software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the start of the survey, and was shut down at some time between the end of the survey and engine shut-down. The tracks thus include the aircraft’s flight to and from the airport base. The 29 track files are named TRMMDDYY_AIR.csv, where MM = month, DD = day, and YY = year.

The Alaska Trumpeter Swan Survey used U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1:63,360 scale quadrangle maps as sampling units (plots). USGS identifies each 1:63,360 map with a combination of two identifiers: 1) the 1:250,000 quadrangle in which it occurs, and 2) the 1:63,360 quadrangle map itself. Similarly, in the swan survey files, the 1:63,360 map is identified by the combination of the “Map” and “Quad” fields. The Map field identifies the 1:250,000 quad by its USGS numeric code; the Quad field identifies the 1:63.360 map by its appropriate letter-number. USGS_Map_Index.tif is a map version of the USGS map index, saved in an image format (.tif).

The Pacific Flyway Winter Brant Survey (WBS) has been conducted annually since 1981 as part of a cooperative effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Canadian Wildlife Service, Mexico, and the Pacific U.S. states, to estimate the abundance of the Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) in their principal wintering areas along the Pacific Coast (in Baja, Mexico, California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska). The survey is conducted each winter in January-February by a composite of ground and aerial crews, with the Alaska portion being conducted by the Alaska Region of USFWS Migratory Bird Management. The primary objective of the Alaska survey component is to provide an annual index of...

Broad scale banding of midcontinent greater white-fronted geese (MCWFG) is motivated by the Flyway Management Plan objective to maintain optimum harvest opportunity throughout the population range (Central, Mississippi, and Pacific Flyway Councils, 2023). This objective is accomplished by implementing a harvest strategy whereby changes to bag limits and season dates are dependent upon thresholds of abundance and harvest rate. Such estimates are calculated through Lincoln estimation (Lincoln 1930, Alisauskas et al. 2009, Dooley 2023) that requires annual banding. In addition, banding provides a means to identify changes in harvest distribution. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Bird Management...

This collection comprises the log files that accompany the quality-controlled (QC) WBPHS-AK transcribed bird-observation data files. The log files were produced when the original (“raw”) transcribed data were run through the QC process via the “Greenlight” script within the R package “AKaerial” (available at github.com/USFWS/AKaerial). The log files describe any changes that were made to the raw transcribed data during the QC process. There is one log file for each QC transcribed data file: WBPHS_YYYY_QCLog_OOO.html, where YYYY=Year and OOO=Observer initials.

This collection contains the quality-control (QC) transcribed data from the Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey. These QC data were produced from the “raw” data using the R Package “AKaerial.” The raw data were evaluated against the current data standards in the ‘AKaerial data dictionary’ and saved to new QC data files with associated log files that document any changes that were made. The data files in this collection were named using the following naming convention: ACP_YYYY_QCObs_OOOO, where ACP=Arctic Coastal Plain, YYYY=Year, QCObs=Quality control observations, and OOOO=observer’s first initial and last name. These data contain known errors. These data should not be used except as raw input for...

This multi-layer GeoPackage contains the Alaska Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey design transects from 2007 to present. The original transects were created as shapefiles and imported to this SQLite database. Transects were saved as individual polylines named according to the year they were created (e.g., “main.ACP_2007_Trans,” “main.ACP_2008_Trans,” “main.ACP_2009_Trans,” etc.). These aerial transects were developed systematically from randomly-selected start points and created along constant lines of latitude. The inter-transect spacing in the low, medium, high, and very-high density strata varies so that areas with higher waterfowl density are surveyed more intensively. The current four-year rotating...
