Dataset contains the groundwater well locations and water-level measurements for 273 wells measured during a water-level survey of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer in Arkansas, January through June 2015. Well-location and water-level data is publicly available from the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Information System.

This dataset captures in digital form the results of previously published U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Mission Area studies related to water resource assessment of Cenozoic strata and unconsolidated deposits within the Mississippi Embayment and the Gulf Coastal Plain of the south-central United States. The data are from reports published from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s by the Gulf Coast Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) studies and in 2008 by the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer Study (MERAS). These studies, and the data presented here, describe the geologic and hydrogeologic units of the Mississippi embayment, Texas coastal uplands, and the coastal lowlands aquifer systems, south-central...
During the spring and summer of 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, Lower Mississippi – Gulf Water Science Center, conducted single well slug tests on selected wells within the Mississippi Alluvial Plain in Arkansas and Mississippi to estimate hydraulic conductivity (K) and transmissivity (T) values for the aquifers in which the wells are screened. A total of 324 tests were conducted on 48 wells. The computer software AQTESOLV version 4.50.002 (HydroSOLVE, Inc., 2007) was used to interpret the slug test data to estimate K and T values. Mean estimates of K for the 44 wells screened in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer ranged from 3 to 401 feet per day (ft/day) and mean estimates of T ranged from 285 to...

The lower Paleogene Wilcox Group crops out around the northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico Basin and is a major coal-bearing unit and a primary oil and gas producer in the lower Paleogene section of the Gulf Coast region. The outcrop distribution of the Wilcox Group and other coal-bearing strata of the Gulf Coast region was compiled as part of a U.S. Geological Survey National Coal Assessment (Warwick and others, 1997). A structure contour map of the top of the Wilcox Group was constructed as part of a U.S. Geological Survey Petroleum Systems and Geologic Assessment of Oil and Gas of the northern Gulf of Mexico coastal region (Warwick, 2017). This surface, mainly constructed using data from oil and gas wells, depicts...

This dataset contains estimates of water withdrawals from 66 principal aquifers and "other" non-principal aquifers during 2015 for various categories of use in each county or county equivalent in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Water Use Science Project is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Withdrawal estimates are summarized in USGS Circular 1464, "Estimated Groundwater Withdrawals from Principal Aquifers in the United States, 2015" (Lovelace and others, 2020). This dataset contains the estimated groundwater withdrawals from principal aquifers by county and county equivalent that are summarized by lithologic...

The groundwater-level change maps for the Sparta-Memphis aquifer are constructed as a point-to-point comparison between wells measured in both 2011 and 2013. Wells not measured in both 2011 and 2013 were not included in the change maps construction. The 2011-2013 change map contains 261 corresponding wells. Groundwater-level differences were calculated by subtracting 2011 groundwater-level measurements, in ft below land surface from the 2013 groundwater-level measurements, in feet below land surface.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, Arkansas Geological Survey, and the Union County Water Conservation Board, has monitored water levels as a part of an ongoing effort to provide information for management of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. The USGS has produced reports, at various intervals, to describe groundwater conditions in the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. These datasets provide the locations of and groundwater-level altitudes from 306 wells that were used to construct a potentiometric contour surface of the Sparta-Memphis aquifer. Measurements were made from January through May 2013 and represent synoptic conditions. All wells were cased completely in...

Dataset contains 20-ft contours for the 2015 Sparta-Memphis aquifer potentiometric-surface map, in Arkansas. The potentiometric-surface shows altitudes at which the water levels would have risen in tightly-cased wells and represents conditions during the period from January through June 2015. Groundwater-level data from wells cased completely in and with the screened interval open to the Sparta-Memphis aquifer are publicly available from the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water Information System.
