Description of Work This spring (2014) we will measure Asian carp eDNA over time at a Missouri River site downstream of multiple spawning areas before and during spawning. We will measure the amount of Asian carp eDNA in water samples. The amount of eDNA will be related to the numbers of eggs and larvae counted in matched samples (water samples taken at the same time and place). The time since the eDNA was released by the carp will be estimated and these results will be related to the average age of AC eggs and larvae in matched samples. We will also test for substances which interfere with the eDNA measurement techniques and can lead to false negatives. We will also be validating markers developed by USGS and...

Description of Work Initial tests of a variety of chemical stimuli identified a strong response to the algal food attractant. Field testing of chemical stimulants based on algae will seek to identify potent mixtures based on persistence and duration of attraction. These studies will include consideration of component chemicals such as amino acids produced by algae that enhance the attractiveness of the stimulus, based on carp smell and taste senses. Means of providing a sustained release of the stimulant will be explored through tests of various media. Tests will be conducted to confirm the possibility that carp can be conditioned to feeding stations that can be used to facilitate their capture. Relevance & Impact...

This data release includes physical and chemical characteristics of field collected sediment and soil samples in Missouri representing potential sediment/soil that may enter the water column during construction related activities. Three samples were collected, including Spring River sediment, Osage River bank soil and Columbia crushed limestone. The impacts of increased suspended solid level due to the three samples on early-stage freshwater mussels were examined using three freshwater mussel species, including Fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea), Arkansas Brokenray (Lampsilis reeveiana), and Washboard (Megalonaias nervosa). Specifically, toxicity endpoints including survival, biomass, and growth of juveniles were...

Interest in the field of environmental DNA (eDNA) is growing rapidly and eDNA surveys are becoming an important consideration for aquatic resource managers dealing with invasive species. However, in order for eDNA monitoring to mature as a research and management tool, there are several critical knowledge gaps that must be filled. One such gap is the fate of eDNA materials in the aquatic environment. Understanding the environmental factors that influence the decay of eDNA and how these factors impact detection probabilities over time and space could have significant implications for eDNA survey design and data interpretation. Here we experimentally explore eDNA decay in waste materials and reproductive cells obtained...

These data are comprised of measurements of gross alpha activity, gross beta activity, and radionuclide activities (isotopic U, isotopic Th, Ra-226) in small rodent bodies. Samples were collected at non-mining and U breccia pipe mining sites in various production stages, in the Grand Canyon watershed.
Data collected from a comprehensive set of hydrodynamic experiments conducted with live grass carp eggs and larvae, to evaluate drifting and swimming patterns with 3 different in-stream obstructions: (1) a gravel bump, (2) a single cylinder, and (3) submerged vegetation. The hydrodynamic behavior of eggs and larvae with each obstruction was continuously monitored for about 85 consecutive hours. Transient spatial distributions of the locations of eggs and larvae across the water column were generated for each flow scenario.
Data from metabarcoding assays to detect a suite of mussel species using mitochondrial DNA regions of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit (ND1) genes sequences.
These data are comprised of measurements of elements (e.g., uranium, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, etc.), major anions (chloride, nitrite+nitrate as nitrogen, sulfate, etc.), dissolved organic carbon, and general water quality characteristics in Canyon Mine containment pond water samples collected in calendar year 2019.
This data set includes a point cloud, digital surface model (DSM), and orthoimagery of the Fighter Strips at Palmyra Atoll, USA. Products were generated from aerial images collected in October 2016 using Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS, or "drones") with a Ricoh GRII digital camera. Imagery was processed using structure-from-motion photogrammetry that generates a three dimensional point cloud (.las) by identifying pixels from multiple images representing the same object and calculating the x, y, and z coordinates of that object/pixel. Point cloud data were processed to create a 6.3 cm resolution DSM (.tif) of the uppermost reflective surface (i.e., data have not been filtered for vegetation classes or height). Finally,...
Within large-river ecosystems, floodplains serve a variety of important ecological functions. A recent survey of 80 managers of floodplain conservation lands along the Upper and Middle Mississippi and Lower Missouri Rivers in the central United States found that the most critical information needed to improve floodplain management centered on metrics for characterizing depth, extent, frequency, duration, and timing of inundation. These metrics can be delivered to managers efficiently through cloud-based interactive maps. To calculate these metrics, we interpolated an existing one-dimensional HEC-RAS hydraulic model for the Middle Mississippi River, which simulated water surface elevations at cross sections spaced...

Data describe a designed environmental DNA (eDNA) survey for the detection of longnose darter (Percina nasuta) in field collected water samples. Parameters described include the limit of detection and limit of quantification of the assay; a list of freshwater fish species tissue samples that were used to test specificity of the assay; and field collected water samples that were tested to detect the presence of longnose darter DNA. Samples were collected from sites on the St. Francis river, Missouri in 2018.
Data consist of genotypes for pallid sturgeon and paddlefish broodstock and artificially-produced larvae at 19 sturgeon microsatellite loci and four paddlefish loci. Microsatellite genotypes allowed confirmation of homozygous sturgeon DNA and absence of paddlefish DNA in haploid gynogens. Data also consist of DNA yield estimates for haploid gynogens for proof of concept that haploid gynogens can provide sufficient DNA quantity for restriction site-associated DNA sequencing studies.
Text files containing data regarding attributes of lake trout egg thiamine concentrations from sites in lakes Huron and Michigan collected during 2019-20, sampling site locations and quality assurance quality control values for comparison to previous years (2017-18) lake trout egg thiamine concentrations.
Diploid and triploid Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella) tagged with acoustic transmitters were observed in Truman Reservoir, Missouri from February 2017 to March 2019 to determine habitat usage in winter. Habitat parameters were measured at used and available sites to model habitat preference. In addition, tagged fish were targeted during removal attempts to determine the efficacy of using tagged Judas Grass Carp in removing wild conspecifics. This dataset includes information on tagged Grass Carp and habitats they selected as well as capture events and characteristics of the wild fish caught during these attempts.
Vegetative buffer strips have been demonstrated to effectively reduce loads of sediment, nutrients, and herbicides in surface runoff, but their effectiveness for reducing veterinary antibiotic loads in runoff has not been well documented. Surface runoff simulation where performed to determine the effectiveness of Vegetative buffer strips vegetation and width on surface runoff loads of the veterinary antibiotics sulfamethazine and lincomycin. The three datasets in this release document 1. physical and chemical soil properties for soil located on experimental vegetated buffer strip plots prior to surface runoff simulations; 2. Rainfall simulator performance data and antecedent soil water content data for all vegetated...
The health of soils along roadways is critical for maximizing habitat quality and minimizing negative ecological effects of roads. Adjacent to unpaved roads, soil chemistry may be altered by the deposition of dust, as well as by road treatment with dust suppressants or soil stabilizer products. If present in roadside soils, these product residues may be available to plants, terrestrial invertebrates, or small mammals. Unfortunately, very few studies have attempted to track the transport of dust suppressants after application. As part of a larger ongoing study on the environmental effects of dust suppressant products on roadside plants and animals, we sampled roadside soils at Loess Bluff National Wildlife Refuge...
